An alternate universe in which a happy, wealthy, fertile barony in the Chionthar Valley must pay a terrible blood-price for its well-being, and sacrifice one of its daughters to an unseen horror beyond imagination.
I. Death is required to fulfill a bargain with a monster. A sacrifice is selected, and she fights against destiny, but there is no escape.
II. Death approaches, and it really is a monstrous thing. The girl doesn't know what it is, or who it is, but she knows two things: Death is on that hilltop with singular purpose, and she can't break her chains.
III. Death can't be dissuaded from its horrible purpose, but is tempted into delay. The girl seems to accept her fate at last, and surrender is sweet.
IV. Death always wins at every game he plays.
