La Realtà Virtuale (VR) è una realtà che produce un'esperienza immersiva (chiamata ache realtà simulata al computer) e nell'ambiente VR sono coinvolti tutti e cinque i sensi (gusto, vista, olfatto, tatto, suono).

La Realtà Aumentata (AR) è la realtà che circonda l'individuo con l'utilizzo o l'aggiunta di un dispositivo.

La Realtà Mista o Mixed Reality (MR) è la fusione dei due mondi (reali e virtuali) allo scopo di produrre nuovi ambienti e visualizzazioni in cui sia gli oggetti fisici e sia quelli digitali possono coesistere e quindi interagire con l'individuo.

La Realtà Estesa (XR) è un neologismo e include tutte le sue forme di realtà precedente (VR, AR, MR), come se fosse una sorta di ombrello.

Sono in via di crescente sviluppo le piattaforme XR con uno standard aperto e royalty-free.

La prima release XR 1.0 è stata rilasciata a luglio 2019.

Per consentire l'accesso alle API WebVR nelle build Chrome ufficiali bisognava selezionare l'opzione "Enabled" ("Abilitato") nell'etichetta posta alla destra di "WebVR" e nella barra dell'URL inserire chrome://flags/#enable-webvr, cercare il flag "Estensioni del gamepad" dove magari aggiungere (sempre nella barra dell'URL) la seguente stringa chrome://flags/#enable-gamepad-extensions e pure il flag "Supporto hardware OpenVR" (in questo caso bisogna scrivere chrome://flags/#openvr

Adesso però le caratteristiche sono cambiate e per qualche vecchia versione è utile saperlo.
