Understanding the meaning of task words helps you to know what is being asked of you and helps direct your answer. Task words direct you towards how to answer a question. Here is a list of task words that you are likely to come across frequently.
Analyze - break an issue down into its component parts, discuss them, and show how they relate to each other
Argue - make a case based on appropriate evidence for and/or against a point of view
Compare - identify the characteristics or qualities two or more things have in common (usually also involves contrast)
Contrast - point out the difference between two things (usually also involves compare)
Define - give details as to show the distinctive differences between an item or concept and other items or concepts
Describe - spell out the main aspects of an idea or topic or the sequence in which a series of things happened
Discuss - investigate or examine by giving key points and possible interpretations, debates, giving reasons for and against, and/or drawing a conclusion
Evaluate - make an assessment of the worth of something, including your personal opinion
Explain - tell how things work or how they came to be the way they are, including perhaps some need to "describe" and "analyze"
Identify - simply naming an item, or picking out what you regard as the key features of something
Interpret - indicate how things relate to some other thing or perspective
List/enumerate - simply naming at least three or more items or concepts
Summarize - state the main points of an argument, omitting all unnecessary and superfluous details and side-issues
