Cooks (415A) prepare a wide range of foods for public consumption in various settings, for small or large groups or individual dishes in restaurants and test kitchens.  Cooks prepare, cook, and assemble food such as meats, salads and dressings, soups, sauces, sandwiches, vegetables, desserts, pastries, baked foods, hot and cold buffets and non-alcoholic beverages.  They create specialty dishes and develops recipes. 

Cooks perform menu and nutrition planning, food costing, purchasing, scheduling and receive deliveries while checking product quality and quantity.  They estimate food, liquor, wine and other beverage consumption to anticipate purchases or requisitions.  Cooks practice according to food safety standards for hygiene, sanitation and safety.

Similar in-demand trades in our area are: Assistant Cook (415B) and Institutional Cook (415D).  Both are also Non-Compulsory but are not Red Seal Trades.  Cook Journeypersons can also choose to advance to Chef (415C).

Apprentice wage increases with skill and experience.  Here is the expected wage range in QUILL Region for 415A:

Low: $17.6 / hour

Median: $17.6 / hour

High: $23 / hour

Note: As 415A-D are all non-compulsory trades, potential apprentices may experience difficulty finding a sponsor.  Employer preferences will depend on the specific hiring needs and expectations of the organization.  Potential apprentices seeking hands-on learning opportunities may consider seeking a college program with co-op opportunities.
