On going project
The Appleton Noon Lions Club has established itself as one of the leading Lions Clubs in the United States as well as in the world for student vision screening. Since 2014 the Club has performed more than 110,000 vision screenings in the Appleton and Fox River Valley area without charge to any of the schools or screening sites. Approximately 12% or 13,000 of these screenings have resulted in out-of-range referrals.
The Club utilizes two Spot Vision Screeners, high-tech instruments that enable the screening of a child in just a few seconds. The screening can be done for children as young as six months and there is no need for verbal communication. The Appleton Noon Lions have a close working relationship with the Appleton Area School District as well as the Menasha Joint School District. These positive relationships have also been established with other public and parochial educational systems within the area.
Vision screening by the Appleton Noon Lions aligns closely with the global focus areas for Lions Clubs International: vision, hunger, environment, diabetes, childhood cancer, disaster relief, youth, and humanitarian causes. Vision became an emphasis area after Helen Keller asked all Lions members back in 1925 to become her knights for the blind in the crusade against blindness.
