Sefer Daniel

SEFER DANIEL 1

[01] In the third year of the reign of Yhoakim king of Yhudah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Yerushalem and besieged it.

[02] And Adonai gave Yhoakim the king of Yhudah into his hand, with part of the sacred vessels of the house of Elohim, which he carried into the land of Shinar Babylonia to the house of his Elah: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his Elah.

[03] And the king spoke to Ashaphnaz, his rab-mag eunuch, that he should bring certain of the sons of the nobles of Yisrael, and of the royal seed, and of the choice ones among the youth in whom there was no blemish, and which were of a goodly visage:

[04] And those that were knowledgeable in all wisdom, and well educated, and of wise understanding, that they might be trained in the letters and tongue of the Kashdim and made worthy to stand in the palace of the king.

[05] And the king appointed them a provision day by day from the portion of the king, and from the wine which he drank, that they might be nourished in this manner three turnings: that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

[06] And there were among the son of Yisrael certain ones from Yhudah, Daniel, Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah: and the sar of eunuchs appointed them names, and he appointed unto Daniel, Beltazzar, and unto Ĥananyah, Shadrak, and unto Mishael, Meshak, and unto Azaryah, Abednego.

[07] But Daniel determined in his heart that he would not profane himself with the portions of the king, nor with the wine which he drank, and he requested of the sar of eunuchs that he might not profane himself.

[08] And the Elohim had brought Daniel into favor and grace with the sar of eunuchs, but the sar of eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear adoni the king, who has weighed out your food and your drink:

[09] For why should he see your faces more drawn than the youth who are cheerful? then you will have endangered my head to the king.

[10] Then Daniel said to the Mulzor who had appointed the sar of eunuchs over Daniel, Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, We beseech you, test your servants ten days, and let them give unto us from the seed bearing produce to consume, and water to drink.

[11] Then let our appearances be looked upon before you, and the appearances of the youth who eat the portions of the king: and as you see fit, so deal with your servants.

[12] And he hearkened unto them in this matter and tested them ten days: and at the end of ten days, their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the youth which were eating the portions of the king.

[13] And so it was that the Mulzor took away their portions, and the wine which they were to drink, and gave them seed bearing produce: and the Elohim gave these four youth intelligence and skill in every writing and wisdom, and unto Daniel was given skillful understanding in all visions and dreams.

[14] And at the end of the days that were commanded of the king, to bring them in, the sar of eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

[15] And the king communed with them, and out of all of them was there none found like Daniel, Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah: and they stood before the king.

[16] And in every wise matter of understanding which the king inquired of them, he found them ten hands above all the Ĥartumim and Ashaphim in all his kingdom: and the king glorified them, and appointed them over the affairs in all his kingdom.

[17] And there dwelt a certain one in Babel whose name was Yhoakim, and he took a wife whose name was Shushanna, the daughter of Ĥelekyah, (חלקיה, Yeshayah 22:20).

[18] And Shushanna was a very fair woman, and one who feared Adonai, and her parents were also righteous and taught their daughter according to the Torah of Moshe.

[19] Moreover Yhoakim was a great wealthy man, and had a paradise garden adjoining his house: and to him the Yhudim resorted because he was honorable above all others.

[20] And it came to pass that two of the ancients of the people were appointed to be judges, such as Adonai has said, that lawlessness came out of Babel from ancient judges who were supposed to govern the people.

[21] These two spent much time at the house of Yhoakim: and from many other cities those that had suits in matters of law came unto them.

[22] And it came to pass, as was her custom when the people had departed, at midday, Shushanna went out to walk in the paradise garden belonging to her husband.

[23] And these two elder judges, when they beheld the elegant woman, the wife of their brother Yhoakim from the sons of Yisrael, going forth into the paradise garden every day and walking, their lust was inflamed toward her.

[24] They turned away their minds, and diverted their eyes, that they might neither look to the heavens nor remember to judge righteous judgment.

[25] Both of them were utterly transfixed with her, and the one to the other pretended the opposite to the evil that had possessed them concerning her, and neither did the woman have any knowledge of this matter.

[26] And as the evening began to dawn, (midday), they would anxiously go forth to cheat one another, whether which one might appear to her first and speak with her.

[27] And behold, according to her custom, Shushanna went walking, and one of the elders had already come, then the other came: and the one questioned the other, saying, Why do you come early this way, at evening dawn, and do not bring me with you?

[28] And one to another each one confessed his sickness: and the one said to the other, Let us go to her! and having agreed, they approached her, and attempted to force her.

[29] But the Yhudiah said to them, I know that if I commit such a thing it is death unto me, and if I do not, I will not escape your hands: but it is better for me to not commit such a thing and fall into your hands, rather than to sin before Adonai!

[30] But the transgressing men turned away, uttering threats among themselves, and laid a snare that they might have a way to put her to death: and they went to the synagogue of the city where they sojourned, and all the sons of Yisrael who were there deliberated.

[31] And the two elders and judges stood up, saying, Send for Shushanna, the daughter of Ĥelekyah, she who is the wife of Yhoakim! and straightway they summoned her.

[32] And as the woman arrived, together with her father and mother and the servants, and her servants being the number five hundred, there came alongside also the four children of Shushanna.

[33] And the woman was exceedingly refined: but the transgressors gave order for her to be uncovered, that they might be filled again with lust for her beauty, and all those who were with her and who knew her wept.

[34] And the elders and judges, having stood, placed their hands upon her head: but she fully trusted HE WHO IS her Elohim, and looking up she wept within herself, saying, HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, the Eternal Elah who knows all things before they come to pass, You know I have not done the wickedness these lawless ones allege against me! and HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS heard her prayer.

[35] And the two elders said, We were walking in the paradise garden of her husband: and as we came roundabout the stadion we saw this woman reclining with a man, and as we stood, we beheld them consorting together.

[36] And they knew not that we stood there, then we agreed one with another, saying, Let us find out who they are: and as we approached we recognized her, but the man fled, having covered himself.

[37] And we laid hold on her, and questioned her who the man was, and she would not announce to us who it was: these things we testify.

[38] And because they were elders and judges of the people, the whole assembly believed them, and behold, as she was being taken out to be destroyed, the Angel of HE WHO IS was commanded, and the Angel gave unto Daniel the Spirit of understanding.

[39] And Daniel parted the crowd, and when he was in the midst of them, he said, Thus is the manner of fools, O sons of Yisrael: do you put a daughter of Yisrael to death without examination and discovery of the plain truth?

[40] And now, separate them unto me one from another at a distance, that I may examine them: and as they separated them, Daniel said to the assembly, Now therefore pay no heed that these are elders, saying they would surely not lie, and I will examine them according to the things that fall unto me from above.

[41] And he called one of them, and they brought the elder to Daniel and the naar-neos, and he said to him, Hear, Hear, having grown ancient in days of wickedness, now your sins which you formerly committed have arrived.

[42] You were entrusted to hear and judge cases carrying the penalty of death, and you condemned the innocent while you were acquitting the guilty: HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS has said, The innocent and the righteous you shall not put to death.

[43] Now therefore, under what kind of tree and in what location of the paradise garden did you see them being together? and the impious one answered, Under a mastic tree.

[44] And the naar-neos said, Truly you have lied against your own soul: for the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS will sever your soul this day!

[45] And having this one removed, he bid them to bring unto him the other, and to that one moreover he said, By what manner is your seed twisted as that of Sidon, and not like that of Yhudah: has beauty deceived you, or was it fleeting passion of lust?

[46] And in this way you dealt with the daughters of Yisrael who feared and consorted with you: but a daughter of Yhudah tolerated not the enduring of your lawless disease.

[47] Now therefore, tell me, under what kind of tree and in what part of the garden did you overtake them consorting together? But he answered, Under an evergreen oak tree.

[48] And the naar-neos said, O sinner, now the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS stands with the rhomphaia until the people destroy you, that he may cut you asunder!

[49] And the whole assembly gave a great shout over the naar-neos: for by the confession of their own mouths he had shown them both to be false witnesses.

[50] And as the Torah openly declares, they did unto them just as they had wickedly intended to do against their sister, and they muzzled them, and led them off, casting them into a ravine: and the Angel of HE WHO IS cast fire through the midst of them.

[51] And guiltless blood was delivered in that day: and from that day forward Daniel was held in great reputation in the sight of the people.

[52] And he is Daniel until the first year of the reign of Kuros.

SEFER DANIEL 2

[01] And with the second year of the dominion of Nebuchadnezzar being filled up, Nebuchadnezzar was dreaming, but his breathing skipped, and his sleep went from him.

[02] And the king commanded the Ĥartumim and the Ashaphim and the Machashphim and the Kashdim to be summoned, to declare unto the king his dreams.

[03] And they came and stood before the king, and the king said to them, I was dreaming a dream, but my spirit was disturbed while observing the dream.

[04] And the Kashdim spoke to the king in Aramit, O king, live into the olamin! Tell the dream unto your servants, and we will show the interpretation.

[05] But the king answered, and said to the Kashdin, The command from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream, and the interpretation thereof, your severed limbs will go to Abaddon and the carcasses of your houses will be made into fertilizer!

[06] But if you reveal to me the dream and the interpretation, you will receive great gifts and rewards and honor from me: therefore show me the dream and the interpretation.

[07] They answered a second time, and said, Let the king tell the dream unto your servants, and the interpretation we will expound.

[08] Answering, the king said, I know of a certainty that you would gain time: for you know that my command is firm, that if you do not make known to me the dream, and expound the interpretation, there is one decree for you!

[09] Surely lying and corrupt words you would speak before me for a season, until the changing of the time:

[10] Now therefore, behold, declare the dream unto me, and I will know that you can expound the interpretation.

[11] And the Kashdin answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the dry land who can disclose the matter of the king: therefore no king, or rab-mag, or shalit ever asked such a thing from any Ĥartum, or Ashaph, or Kashdi.

[12] The thing which the king requires is rare, and there is no one who can disclose it to the king except the Elahin who dwell not with flesh.

[13] For all this the king was greatly enraged and furious: and he gave order for the destruction of all the wise men of Babel (or, in Bel, בבל, baBel).

[14] And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain, and they sought Daniel and his associates, to slay them.

[15] Then Daniel spoke with counsel and prudence unto Arioch, rab-mag of the guard for the king, who was come forth to slay the wise men of Babel.

[16] And he inquired of Arioch, the king's shalita, and said, Why is the decree from the king so urgent? then Arioch made the matter known unto Daniel.

[17] And Daniel went in, and requested of the king that a time might be given to him, and he would show the interpretation to the king.

[18] Then Daniel departed to his house, and made the matter known to Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, his companions.

[19] And they petitioned the mercies of Elah Shamaya concerning this mystery, that Daniel and his associates not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babel.

[20] Then unto Daniel, in a vision of the night, the mystery was revealed: and Daniel knelt unto Elah Shamaya.

[21] And Daniel spoke, and said, Blessed be the Name of Elah from olama to olama: for wisdom and power are His.

[22] He turns the years and the appointed times: He removes kings and sets up kings: He gives wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.

[23] He reveals the deep and secret things: He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.

[24] Unto you, O Elah of my fathers, I give thanks and praise You for the wisdom and power You have given unto me, and for now having made known unto me what we desired of You: the matter of the king, which You have made known unto us.

[25] For all this Daniel went unto Arioch, whom the king appointed to destroy the wise men of Babel, and having gone, thus he said to him, Destroy not the wise men of Babel: bring me in before the king, and I will show the interpretation unto the king.

[26] Then Arioch made haste to bring Daniel in before the king, and said thus to him, There is found a geber from the sons of the captivity, who is of Yhudah, who will make known unto the king the interpretation.

[27] And answering the king said to Daniel, whose name was Beltazzar, Are you able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?

[28] Daniel answered before the king, and said, The mystery which the king demands, the wise men, Ashaphin, Ĥartumin, and Gazarin, are not able to reveal unto the king.

[29] But there is an Elah in the shamaya who reveals mysteries: and He makes known unto king Nebuchadnezzar what shall come to pass in the latter days.

[30] Your dream and the visions of your head upon your bed are this:

[31] Your thoughts upon your bed came up, O king, of what should come to pass in the latter time: and He that reveals mysteries makes known to you what shall come to pass.

[32] But as for me, this mystery is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for the intent that the interpretation be made known to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart.

[33] You, O king, were looking, and behold, one giant image: this image, great and exceedingly bright, stood before you, and the form thereof was terrible.

[34] His head was of the good gold, his breast and his arms were of silver, his belly and his thighs were of brass, his legs were of iron, his feet part iron and part clay.

[35] You were watching this until a stone was cut out without hands, and smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and ground them to pieces.

[36] Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold were ground to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors, and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great rock-mountain, and filled all the earth.

[37] This is the dream: and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.

[38] You, O king, are a king of kings: for Elah Shamaya has given you a dominion, power, and strength, and glory.

[39] And in all the habitable earth, the sons of men, the beasts of the field, the fowls of the heaven, and the fish of the sea, he has given into your hand to dominate them all.

[40] You are the head of gold.

[41] And in your place shall arise another dominion of the earth from you, and another third dominion of brass, which shall dominate in all the earth.

[42] And the fourth dominion shall be strong as iron, forasmuch as iron shatters and crushes all things: and as iron destroys more than all these, it will shatter and crush.

[43] And whereas you beheld the feet and toes partly of potters' clay, and partly of iron, the dominion shall be divided: but there will be in it the strength of the iron, forasmuch as you beheld the iron mixed with sticky clay.

[44] And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron, and partly of clay: part of the final dominion shall be strong, and part of it fragile.

[45] And as you beheld iron mixed with sticky clay, they will mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they will not adhere one to another, even as iron mixes not with clay.

[46] And in the days of these kings Elah Shamaya will set up a dominion which shall not be destroyed to the olamin, and the kingdom will not be left to other people: it shall crush to pieces and consume all these dominions, and it shall stand into the Olamaya.

[47] Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the rock-mountain without hands, and that it crushed to pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold:

[48] Elah the Great has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof surely trustworthy.

[49] Then king Nebuchadnezzar lowered his face, and prostrated unto Daniel, and he commanded that they should offer oblations and libations unto him.

[50] And the king answered Daniel, and said, Of a truth your Elah is Elah of the Elahin, and Master of kings, and the Revealer of secrets, seeing you could reveal this mystery.

[51] Then the king made Daniel a Rabbi, and bestowed unto him many great gifts, and set him to have dominion over the whole province of Babel, and made him Rab of governors over all the wise men of Babel.

[52] And Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babel: and Daniel was in the gate of the king.

SEFER DANIEL 3

[01] In the eighteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, ruling cities and regions and all the permanent dwellers upon the earth from India to Ethiopia, he made an image of gold sixty cubits high and six cubits wide: and he stood it up in the plain of the commons, the outer dwelling roundabout the enclosure wall of the district of Babel.

[02] And Nebuchadnezzar, king of kings, ruling the whole habitable world, called together the viceroys, the governors, the prefects, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the lawyers, even all the rulers of the provinces of all the nations, tribes, and tongues, to come to the dedication of the image king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

[03] Then the viceroys, the governors, the prefects, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the lawyers, even all the rulers of the provinces were gathered together to the dedication of the image that king Nebuchadnezzar had stood up: and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

[04] Then the herald cried aloud, Unto you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, tribes, and tongues, that at the set time when you hear the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the zither, the lyre, the harp, the wind pipe, even every kind of music, you shall fall down and worship the golden image which king Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

[05] And whosoever will not fall down and worship: the same shall be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace in that hour.

[06] Therefore at the appointed time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the zither, the lyre, the harp, the wind pipe, even every kind of music: all the peoples, nations, tribes, and tongues, fell down and worshiped the golden image which king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

[07] For all this there was occasion for certain Kashdin to come and bring accusation against the Yhudin: they said to king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live into the olamin!

[08] You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the zither, the lyre, the harp, the wind pipe, even every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image.

[09] And whosoever will not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

[10] There are certain Yhudin whom you have set over the affairs of the district of Babel, Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego: these men, O king, have not regarded you, they serve not your Elahin, nor worship the golden image which you have set up.

[11] Then Nebuchadnezzar was furiously enraged, and commanded that Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego be brought, and these men were brought before the king.

[12] And king Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying them, By design, Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego, you serve not my Elah, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

[13] Now therefore, behold, prepare yourselves, and if at the appointed time when you hear the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the zither, the lyre, the harp, the wind pipe, even every kind of music, you fall and worship the image which I have made, good!

[14] But if you worship not, then the same hour you will be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace: and who is that Elah who will deliver you out of my hands?

[15] Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego answered, and said to king Nebuchadnezzar, We have no need to respond back to you concerning this matter.

[16] Behold, if it is to be, our Elah whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace: and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

[17] But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will neither serve your Elahin, nor worship the golden image which you have set up.

[18] Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the image of his visage was altered, and his countenance was set against Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego.

[19] And king Nebukhadretzar spoke and commanded the furnace to be heated one seven times more than it was usual to be heated.

[20] And he commanded certain mighty ones under his command to bind Shadrak, Meshak, and Abednego, that they might be cast into the burning fiery furnace.

[21] Then these men were bound in their sandals, their tunics, their mantles, and their garments, and he ordered that they be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

[22] For all this, because the commandment of the king was urgent, and the furnace was sevenfold hotter than usual: the mighty ones who were chosen, after they had bound Azaryah and those with him, brought them to the furnace and cast them into it:

[23] And the fiery flames coming out of the furnace scorched and slew the mighty ones who had taken up Azaryah and those with him: but not Azaryah and those with him.

[24] And these three, Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, being bound, fell down into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

[25] But Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, began to pray and sing hymns unto HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, when the king commanded them to be cast into the furnace.

[26] Then Azaryah stood, and commenced praying after the manner, and opening his mouth he acknowledged HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS together with his fellows, in the midst of the fire, while the Kashdin yet heated the furnace hotter and hotter, saying,

[27] א Blessed are You, HE WHO WAS AND WHO IS the Elohim of our fathers, Your Name is worthy to be praised and glorified into the olamim of the olamim:

[28] ב For You are righteous concerning all that You have done to us, and all Your works are true, and Your ways are right, and all Your judgments are truth.

[29] ג In all the things You have brought upon us, and upon Yerushalem, Your holy city of our fathers, You have executed true judgments: for according to truth and justice You have brought all these things upon us because of our sins.

[30] ד For we have sinned in all things, and have become lawless in turning away from You: in all things we have trespassed grievously.

[31] ה The precepts of Your Torah we have not heard attentively, and we have not done as You have commanded us, that it might go well with us.

[32] ו Therefore all that You have brought upon us, and everything that You have done to us, You have done in true upright judgment.

[33] ז You have delivered us into the hands of lawless enemies, and hateful rebels, and to an unjust king more fierce that any in the world.

[34] ח And now there is unto us no opening of the mouth: Your servants and those who worship You have become a shame and a reproach.

[35] ט For the sake of Your Name, deliver us not up entirely, nor annul Your covenant.

[36] י Let not Your mercy depart from us, for the sake of Abraham who is beloved of You, and for the sake of Your servant Yitzhak, and Your Holy One Yisrael:

[37] יא To whom You promised that You would multiply their offspring as the stars of the heavens for multitude, and as the sand that is on the sea shore.

[38] יב For we, Master, have become fewer than any nation, and are humiliated this day in all the world because of our own sins.

[39] יג At this time there is no prince, or prophet, or leader, and no offering, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, neither a place to offer before You and find mercy:

[40] יד But with a broken soul and a humbled spirit, let us be accepted as though it were with the ascending offerings of rams and bulls.

[41] טו As with myriads of lambs, so let our sacrifice come up before You this day: for they shall not be ashamed who put their trust in You.

[42] טז And now we follow You with whole heart: we reverence You and seek Your face.

[43] יז Put us not to shame: but deal with us according to Your kindness, and according to the abundance of Your mercy.

[44] יח Deliver us according to Your marvelous works, and glorify Your Name, HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS.

[45] יט Let all those who render evil toward Your servants be confounded.

[46] כ Let them be ashamed of all their power and might and let their strength be broken.

[47] כא Let them know that You alone are HE WHO IS Elohim and glorious over all the world.

[48] And when they cast these three into the burning fiery furnace all at once, the furnace was red hot, seven times its usual heat: and those who cast them in were above them.

[49] But those who were below were continually stoking the furnace hotter and hotter, with naphtha, pitch, sticks, and tinder, from beneath.

[50] And behold, the flames rose up forty nine cubits above the furnace, and spread all about, and scorched and burned the Kashdin who were near the burning fiery furnace.

[51] But the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS descended into the furnace, together with Azaryah and his fellows, and he smote the flames of the fire out of the furnace.

[52] He made the midst of the furnace as though a misty breeze was whistling through it, so that the fire touched them not at all, and neither harmed nor troubled them.

SEFER DANIEL 4

[01] Then Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, as though out of one mouth, were singing hymns, and glorifying and exalting and blessing Elah in the furnace, saying,

[30] כט Every flyer of the heavens, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[31] ל Every beast and all cattle, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[32] לא O sons of Adam, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[33] לב Let Yisrael bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[34] לג Kohanim of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[35] לד Servants of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[36] לה Spirits and souls of the righteous, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[37] לו You who are holy and humble of heart, bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS! Praise and exalt Him over all into the olamim!

[38] לז Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah bless HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS!

[39] לח We praise and exalt Him above all into the olamim: for He has rescued us from Sheol, and has delivered us from the power of death!

[40] לט He has delivered us out of the midst of the fiery furnace and the burning flame!

[41] מ He has delivered us out of the midst of the fire!

[42] מא Give thanks unto HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, for He is good, for His mercy endures into the olamim!

[43] מב All you who worship HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, bless the Elah of the Elohim, praise Him, and render unto Him thanksgiving: for His mercy endures into the olamim of the olamim!

[44] And it came to pass that king Nebuchadnezzar heard them singing hymns and praises, and he was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spoke, saying to his counselors, Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?

[45] They answered the king, True indeed, O king, and he said to them, Behold, I see four gibborin walking freely in the midst of the fire, and they are not harmed: and the appearance of the fourth is like unto a son of the Elahin!

[46] Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and he called them by their names, saying, Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, servants of the Most High Elah, come forth now and come here unto me!

[47] Then Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah came forth out of the midst of the fire: and the local toparchs, and the chief patriarchs, and the friends of the king, being gathered together, beheld these men, that the fire had no power over their bodies.

[48] The hair of their head was not singed, their trousers were not altered in any way, and there was not even the smell of fire upon them.

[49] Then Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, Blessed be HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, the Elah of Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, who sent His Angel to deliver His servants who trusted in Him!

[50] And He has overturned the word of the king, and His servants have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any Elahin except their own Elah.

[51] I therefore make a decree, that any people, nation, and tongue, that blasphemes the Most High Elah of Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, shall be cut in pieces, and the carcasses of their houses shall be made into fertilizer: for there is no other Elah who is able to deliver according to this manner!

[52] Then the king promoted Ĥananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah, and gave them authority over all the district of Babel, and they were made Archons.

SEFER DANIEL 5

[01] Nebuchadnezzar the king wrote an address to all nations in every place, to countries and languages who live in every region of the world, and to all generations.

[02] Praise HE WHO IS the Elohim of the heavens! and bring sacrifice and offering unto Him gloriously!

[03] I Nebuchadnezzar, king of kings, do acknowledge Him gloriously: for He has done thus herein with me.

[04] Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all nations and all countries and all the inhabitants therein: May peace be multiplied unto you always.

[05] And now, I will show you the works which the Great Elah has done with me.

[06] Moreover it seemed good to me to show you and your scholars that there is but one Elah: and His wondrous works are mighty, and His dominion is into the olamim of the olamim, and His authority and power is from generation to generation.

[07] In the eighteenth year of reigning, I Nebuchadnezzar, was living at peace in my home and prospering on my throne.

[08] And I saw a dream, and I was alarmed, and fear fell upon me: I was sleeping, and behold, a great tree was flourishing upon the earth.

[09] It had the appearance of a giant, and there was no other like it: its branches were as though thirty stadia roundabout in reach, and all the beasts of the earth found shade beneath it, and the birds of the air nested and brooded in its branches.

[10] Its fruit was abundant and good, it sustained all living creatures, its appearance was mighty, and its crown reached three thousand cubits unto the face of the shamayim.

[11] It spanned the clouds, filling the space under the heavens, and the sun and the moon dwelt therein and illuminated all the earth.

[12] Watching I was, in the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a Watcher Angel and the Holy One descended out of the heaven, and he cried aloud, saying, Cut down the tree, destroy its branches, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get out from beneath it, and the birds of the air out of his branches.

[13] But leave the stump of his roots in the earth, and bind it with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field: and let him be wet with the dew of the heavens, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

[14] Let his heart be changed from that of a man, and let the heart of a beast be given unto him, and let seven times pass-over him.

[15] This matter is by decree of the Watchers, and the demand by the Memra of the holy ones: that the living may know that the Most High rules in the dominion of men, and gives it to whomsoever He will, and sets up over it the humblest of men.

[16] And it was cut down before me in one day, and its destruction in one hour of the day: and its branches were given to the four winds, and the rest was dragged away.

[17] The mighty ate grass with the beasts of the earth, and was delivered into prison, and was bound with shackles of iron and brass: and I marveled greatly at all these things, and my sleep fled from my eyes.

[18] And when I arose from my bed at dawn, I summoned Daniel, whose name was Beltazzar, the Archon of the sophists and governor of those who interpret dreams: and I recounted the dream unto him, and he showed me the whole interpretation.

[19] But Daniel was greatly astonished, and foreboding came upon him, and he feared as trembling seized upon him, and his countenance was altered.

[20] And having marveled one hour, he answered in a mellow voice, saying, O king, let the dream be for those who hate you, and its interpretation come upon your enemies.

[21] The tree that flourished in the earth, whose appearance was great, it is you, O king.

[22] And the birds of the air that nested in it: the strength of the earth, and the nations, and all the languages unto the ends of the earth, and all lands, are servants unto you.

[23] And because the tree was exalted, and reached unto the heavens, and that its span touched the clouds, it is this: You, O king, have been exalted above all men who are upon the face of the whole earth.

[24] But you exalted your heart in power and pride against the Holy One and His Watcher Angels, and the seven Eyes beheld your works, how you plundered the house of the Living Elah over the sins of the sanctified people.

[25] And the vision you saw of a Watcher Angel and the Holy One that descended, and that he gave command to cut down and destroy the tree: the decision of the Great Elah will come upon you, and you cannot escape the Watcher Angels of the Most High.

[26] They will take you away to prison, and send you away into a desert place, and the stump of the tree which was spared, not being uprooted: the place of your throne will be kept for you until an appointed time and hour.

[27] Behold, they are being prepared against you, and they will scourge you, and they will bring the judgments against you.

[28] HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS lives in heavens, and His authority is over all the earth: entreat Him over your sins, and atone for your iniquities with alms, if so be that equity might be given to you, and you might live long on the throne of your kingdom, and not be utterly destroyed.

[29] Receive these words in love, for my word is accurate, and your time is full.

[30] And with the completion of these words, as I heard the judgment of the vision, I Nebuchadnezzar kept the words in my heart.

[31] And after twelve months I was walking about the walls of the city in all my glory, and going through its towers, and I magnified in my boast, saying,

[32] O Babylon the Great, which I have built by the mighty strength of my power!

[33] And at the end of this word, I heard a voice from the heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, unto you is this word, The dominion of Babel is taken from you, and is given to another, even to a lesser esteemed man in your house.

[34] Behold, I establish him over your kingdom, and he will receive your authority and your glory and your luxury, that you may know that the Elah of the heavens has the authority in the dominion of men, and will give it to whomever He pleases.

[35] Therefore by sunrise another king will reign over your house, and will assume your glory, and your power, and your authority.

[36] And the Angels will examine you seven times, and you will not be seen, nor will you speak with anyone.

[37] They will feed you with grass like an ox, and your pasture will be from the tender grass of the earth, and behold, instead of your glory they will tie you up, and another will have your luxurious house and dominion.

[38] By morning dawn everything will be completed concerning you, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel, and not one of all these things will fail.

[39] And I, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel, was bound seven times: and they fed me with grass like an ox, and I consumed the tender grass of the earth.

[40] And after the seven times I gave my soul over to supplication, and I petitioned before HE WHO IS the Elohim of the heavens concerning my sins, and I entreated the Great Elah of the Elohim concerning my ignorance.

[41] And my hair had become like feathers of an eagle, my nails like the claws of a lion:

[42] My flesh and my heart were altered, and I walked naked with the beasts of the field.

[43] Then I saw a dream, and a fearful foreboding gripped me: then a deep sleep overtook me, and a horror of darkness fell upon me.

[44] And at the completion of the seven times my hour of redemption came, and my sins and my ignorances were fulfilled before the Elah of the heavens: and I entreated the Great Elah of the Elohim concerning my ignorances.

[45] And behold, one Angel called to me from the heaven, saying, Nebuchadnezzar, submit to the Holy Elah of the heavens and glorify the Most High: the dominion of your nation is returned unto you.

[46] On that day my kingdom was restored to me, and my glory was given back to me, and I acknowledged the Most High, and I praised the One who created the heaven and the earth and the seas and the rivers and everything that is in them.

[47] Now I acknowledge Him, and I praise Him, for He is Elah of the Elohim, and Adon of adonim, and Master of kings: for He works signs and wonders, and changes seasons and times, removing the rulership of kings, and setting others in their place.

[48] From now and onward I serve Him, and I tremble in the reverential fear of Him, and I praise Him together with all His holy ones:

[49] For the Elahin of the nations have no power to give the dominion of a king to another king, or to kill and make alive, or to work such great signs and terrible marvels, or to change such very great matters as the Great Elah Shamaya has done with me:

[50] And He has changed very great and terrible things concerning me!

[51] And I will offer ascending offerings unto the Most High as fragrant incense for my life every day of my reign, and I will do what is pleasing before Him: I, and my people, and all my lands that are in my authority.

[52] And as many as have spoken against the Great Elah of the heavens, and as many as should be caught speaking anything against Him: I will condemn them to death.

SEFER DANIEL 6

[01] In the nineteenth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel the decree of the Memra through the Holy Watchers fell upon him, and the king was smitten for the seven times, and behold, Darius Artaxares the son of Kyaxares ruled the land of the Kashdin until Nebuchadnezzar was restored.

[02] For in the year following king Nebuchadnezzar having been smitten, Kyaxares was added to his people, and his son Artaxares Astyages received the dominion of the Medes, and Darius Astyages filled up the days, being honorable in his old age.

[03] And Darius appointed a hundred twenty seven satraps over the entire dominion, and over these he set three emirs to govern them: and Daniel was one of the three emirs.

[04] Then Daniel was preferred above the emirs and satraps, for an excellent spirit was in him, and the king purposed to set him over the whole kingdom: because of this the emirs and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom.

[05] But they could find no occasion or fault, forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or corruption found in him: then these men said, We shall not find any occasion against Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the Torah of his Elah.

[06] Then the emirs and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, King Darius, live into the olamin! all the emirs of the kingdom, the satraps and prefects, the counselors and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any Elah or man for thirty days, except for you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

[07] Then they requested of the king that he establish a statue that the laws of the Medes and Persians cannot be altered, and they said, Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing: and so did king Darius, and he signed the writings and decrees.

[08] And Daniel, knowing the writings were signed, entered his house: his windows open in his chamber facing Yerushalem, and he kneeled on his knees three times in the day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his Elah, just as always in the hours of prayer.

[09] Then these men assembled, and they found Daniel praying and making supplication before his Elah: so they came, and spoke before the king about the decrees, saying, Have you not signed a decree, that anyone who shall petition any Elah or man within thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?

[10] The king answered and said, The matter is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which alters not, and they answered and said before the king, Daniel, who is of the sons of the captivity of Yhudah, regards you not, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, for behold, he makes his petition three times in a day!

[11] Then the king, having heard these words, was much displeased with himself, and set his heart to deliver Daniel, and he worked until the going down of the sun to deliver him: but these men assembled unto the king, and said to the king, Remember, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is that no decree or statute which the king has established may be changed!

[12] Then the king commanded it to be done, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions: and the king spoke to Daniel, and said, Your Elah whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.

[13] And a stone was brought, and they laid it over the mouth of the den: and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his rabrabban magnates, that the purpose might not be altered concerning Daniel.

[14] Then the king went to his palace, and passed through the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him, and his sleep departed from him, and the king arose at the early morning dawn, and went with haste to the den of lions.

[15] And when he came to the den, he cried with a voice of lamentation unto Daniel, and the king spoke and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the Living Elah, was your Elah, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?

[16] Then Daniel said to the king, O king, live into the olamin! my Elah sent his Angel, and shut the mouths of the lions! they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before Him innocency was found in me, and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt.

[17] Then the king was exceeding joyful over him, and he commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den: thus Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him because he trusted in his Elah.

[18] And the king commanded, and they brought the men which had tried to devour Daniel with accusations, and cast them, and their children, and their wives, into the den of lions: and the lions overpowered them, and broke all their bones into pieces before they ever arrived at the bottom of the den.

[19] Then king Darius wrote unto all people and nations and tongues that dwell in all the habitable land, Peace be multiplied unto you: I make a decree, that in every realm of my dominion men tremble and fear before the Elah of Daniel: for He is the Living Elah, and steadfast into the olamin.

[20] His kingdom is that which shall never be destroyed, and His dominion shall be unto everlasting: He delivers and rescues, and works signs and wonders in the heavens and upon the earth, He who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

[21] And Darius Artaxares was added to his people, and Kuros the Persian received his dominion: and Daniel was appointed over the dominion of Darius.

[22] And Daniel was a trusted companion of the king, and honored above his fellows, and there was an idol, Bel, which the Babylonians revered, and every day twelve bushels of choice flour and four sheep and six measures of olive oil were offered unto it.

[23] Moreover the king revered the idol, and he would go every day to do obeisance to it: but Daniel would pray unto HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, and the king said to Daniel, Why do you not do obeisance unto Bel? and Daniel said to the king, I revere none but HE WHO WAS AND WHO IS Elohim, He who created the heavens and the earth.

[24] And the king said to him, This one therefore is not an Elah? You do not see how much is offered to him every day? and Daniel said to him, No, not at all, let no one deceive you, for this idol is merely clay on the inside and bronze on outside.

[25] And Daniel said, By the Elah of the Elahin, this one has never eaten anything!

[26] And being angered, the king summoned the priests of the idol temple, and said to them, Produce the one who eats the things prepared for Bel: but if not, you will die, either you or Daniel who says they are not being eaten by Bel!

[27] And they said, It is Bel himself who eats the offerings! then Daniel said to the king, Let it be thus: unless I prove that Bel is not eating them, I and those with me shall die.

[28] And there were seventy priests of Bel, moreover their wives and children: so he brought the king into the idol temple, and the food was laid out in the presence of the king and Daniel, and the olive oil was brought in and set before Bel.

[29] And Daniel said, You see, O king, how these things are laid out: let us therefore seal the bolts of the shrine when it is closed, and this word pleased the king.

[30] Then Daniel ordered those with him to scatter ashes about the whole shrine after everyone departed from the temple, and no one but he and those with him knew of it.

[31] And as he sealed the shrine, he ordered that it be sealed with the signet of the king, and with the signets of the illustrious ones who were with him: and so it was.

[32] And it came to pass the next day that they returned to the place, and Daniel said, Men, priests, examine your seals, whether they remain: and you also, O king, watch carefully, lest anything seem out of order to you.

[33] And they found the seals as they were, and they broke the seals, and when they opened the doors, they saw that everything which was laid out appeared to have been consumed, for the tables were empty.

[34] Then the king was elated, and said to Daniel, Great is Bel! there is no deceit in him!

[35] But Daniel laughed aloud, and said to the king, Come and see the deceit of the priests, and Daniel said, O king, these footprints on the floor, whose are they? and the king answered, I see footprints of men and women and children!

[36] And Daniel showed the king the false doors through which the priests would go into the shrine to take out and consume what was laid out for Bel.

[37] Then they followed the passage through the false doors, until they arrived at the house where the priests abode: and there they found the food and the olive oil.

[38] Then the king took the priests of the idol temple and handed them over to Daniel: and he allotted the provision that was for Bel unto Daniel, and he destroyed the idol, Bel.

[39] Moreover there was a dragon in that same place which the Babylonians revered, and the king said to Daniel, Surely you would not also say that this one is bronze, for behold, he lives and eats and drinks! Will you not do obeisance unto the Dragon?

[40] And Daniel said, O king, allow me, and I will slay the dragon with neither iron nor staff, and the king permitted it, saying, You have my permission.

[41] And Daniel took thirty minas of pitch and fat and hair, and boiled them together, and made it into a ball of mass: and he tossed it into the mouth of the dragon, and the dragon having eaten it burst asunder belly up.

[42] And Daniel showed it to the king, saying, Are these the things you revere, O king?

[43] Then all those from that province assembled against Daniel, saying, The king has now become a Yhudin! he has destroyed Bel and slain the Dragon!

[44] And when the king saw that the mob from that province had united against him, he called his companions, saying, I must give Daniel over for destruction.

[45] And there was a pit where seven lions were fed, into which the conspirators against the king would be delivered, and every day two bodies of those condemned to death would be thrown to the lions.

[46] And the mob took Daniel and threw him into that pit, that he might be devoured, and not even have a burial.

[47] And Daniel was in the pit six yômim, and it came to pass in the sixth yōm, that Ĥabakkuk had broken bread in a bowl of boiled soup, and a jar of mixed wine, and was going out to the field of the plain, to the reapers.

[48] And the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS spoke to Ĥabakkuk, saying, Thus says Elah: The food you have, take it to Daniel whose name is Beltazzar, who is in the pit of lions in Babel: and Ĥabakkuk said, Adoni, I have not seen Babel, and I know not where is the pit.

[49] And the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS took Ĥabakkuk by the hairs of his head, in the heat of his spirit, and set him down on the ledge of the pit that was in Babel: and Ĥabakkuk said to Daniel, Rise! and devour the food which Elah has sent you!

[50] Daniel said, HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS Elohim forsakes not those who love Him, and He has remembered me! and Daniel ate, and the Angel of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS returned Ĥabakkuk to the place from where he had taken him in that same hour.

[51] So Elohim remembered Daniel, and after these things, the king arrived, mourning Daniel, and when he looked down into the pit, behold, he saw him seated!

[52] And the king gave a shout, and then said, Great is HE WHO IS! and there is none beside Him! and the king brought Daniel out of the pit, and ordered that those who tried to destroy Daniel be thrown into the pit, and they were devoured.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 1

[01] Commencing the first year of Beltazzar ruling Babel (or, in Bel) Daniel saw the full dream bound together in visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream in chapter sections, (ראשמלינ, κεφαλαια) saying,

[02] Watching I was, in the visions of the night upon my bed, and behold, the four winds of the heavens were rushing on the great sea: and four beasts ascended out of the sea, each one differing from the other.

[03] The first was like unto a lioness, having wings as of an eagle, and I was watching until her wings were plucked: and she was raised up from the earth, and made to stand upon the feet as a man, and the heart of a man was given to her.

[04] And behold, after it a second beast like unto a bear, and to one side she stood, and three ribs were in her mouth: and thus was said to her, Arise, devour much flesh!

[05] Watching I was after this, and behold, another, like unto a leopard, and she had four wings of a fowl on the curve: and the beast had four heads, and she was given dominion.

[06] Watching I was after this in the visions of the night, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and exceedingly powerful, having great teeth of iron to devour: and he crushed the remainder with his feet and trampled about, and he was different from all the beasts that were before him, and he had ten horns.

[07] I considered the horns, and behold, another came up among them, a little horn, and three of the first horns were uprooted by it, and behold, in this horn, eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth speaking great things: and he made war against the holy ones.

[08] Watching I was until thrones were placed, and Attiq-Yomin was seated, whose garment is white as snow, and the hair of His head like pure bright wool: His throne as it were fiery tongues of rolling fiery flames.

[09] A river of fire issued forth and came out from before Him, a thousand thousands ministered unto Him, and myriads of myriads stood before Him: and the Judge was seated, and the books were opened.

[10] Watching I was then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke: I watched until the beast was slain, and his body destroyed and given to the burning fire.

[11] And the remaining beasts had their dominion taken away: but a timespan of life was given to them, until the span of time and the appointed time.

[12] Watching I was in the visions of the night, and behold, with the clouds of heaven, one like the son of Enosh: coming he was, and unto Attiq-Yomin he arrived, and they brought him near before Him.

[13] And unto him was given the dominion, and the glory, and the kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and tongues, should serve him: his dominion is the dominion to olam which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

[14] As for me, Daniel, my spirit was pierced through the midst of the sheath, and the visions of my head terrified me.

[15] I approached one of those standing by and asked him the truth of all this, and he spoke to me, and made known to me the interpretation of these things.

[16] These great beasts, which are four: four kings shall arise out of the earth.

[17] But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the dominion, and shall possess the kingdom unto olama, and into olam olamaya.

[18] Then I desired the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was a diversity of all, exceedingly fearful, whose teeth were of iron, and his claws of brass, who devoured, crushed to pieces, and trampled what remained with his feet:

[19] And concerning the ten horns which were in his head, and the other which ascended, before whom three fell: that horn which had eyes, and a mouth speaking great things, and his appearance more fierce than his associates.

[20] I watched that horn making war with the holy ones, and prevailing against them, until the Attiq-Yomin was come and the judgment was given to the holy ones of the Most High, and the appointed time came, and the holy ones possessed the dominion.

[21] Thus he said, the fourth beast shall be the fourth dominion in the earth, which shall be a diverse-composite of all the dominions, and shall consume all the earth, and shall trample it down, and shall crush it to pieces.

[22] And the ten horns of the dominion: ten kings shall arise, and another shall ascend after them, and he shall be different from the first, and he will subdue three kings

[23] And he will speak words against the Most High, and will cause affliction to the holy ones of the Most High: and he imagines to change appointed times and commandments, and they will be delivered into his hand until a time, and times, and half a time.

[24] But the Judge will be seated, and they will cut off his dominion unto desolation and destruction until the end.

[25] And the realm, and dominion, and greatness of the whole kingdom beneath the heaven, shall be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High, whose kingdom is the olam kingdom: and all dominions shall serve Him, and shall intelligently hear.

[26] Hereunto is the end of the matter: as for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my cheerful countenance turned against me, and I kept the matter in my heart.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 2

[01] In the first year of Artaxares Astyages of the seed of the Medes, he ruled over the dominion of the Kashdim: but in the first year of his reign over the Medians, that is, Darius, [580 BC] I, Daniel, understood in the seferim the number of the turnings which was the Word of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS unto Yirmeyah the Prophet, seventy turnings, to complete the desolations of Yerushalem.

[02] א And I set my face toward Adoni the Elohim to inquire by supplication and earnest prayer, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes, and I made intercession unto HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, my Elah, and offered up my confession, and I said, I beseech You, Adoni, the Great and Awesome El, guarding the covenant, and showing mercy to those who love Him, and to those guarding His precepts.

[03] ב We have sinned, and we have worked iniquity, and we have done wickedly: and we have rebelled, and we have departed from Your precepts and from Your judgments.

[04] ג And we have not listened carefully to Your servants the Prophets who spoke in Your Name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

[05] ד Unto You, Adoni, belongs the righteousness: but to us belongs the shame of our faces as it is this day, to the men of Yhudah, and to those living in Yerushalem, and to all Yisrael who are near and far, through all the lands where You have driven them because of their unfaithfulness which they have done against You:

[06] ה The shame of our faces belongs unto us, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, for we have sinned against You, HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS.

[07] ו To Adoni our Elah are the mercies and forgivenesses: for we rebelled against Him.

[08] ז We have not diligently hearkened to the voice of HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, our Elah, to walk in His teachings which He set before us by His servants the Prophets.

[09] ח And all Yisrael has transgressed Your Torah, and has turned aside, that they might not intelligently hear Your voice.

[10] ט For this reason the curse has been poured upon us, and the oath which is written in the Torah of Moshe the servant of the Elohim: for we have sinned against Him.

[11] י And He has confirmed His words which He spoke against us, and against our judges who judge us, by bringing upon us great evil:

[12] יא For under all the heavens it has not been done as it has been done to Yerushalem.

[13] יב As it is written in the Torah of Moshe, all this evil has come upon us, yet we made not our supplication before HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, our Elah, that we might turn from our iniquities and to become circumspect concerning Your truth.

[14] יג And HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS has watched over the evil, and has brought it upon us: for HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS our Elah is righteous in all His works which He does, for we obeyed not His voice.

[15] יד And now, Adoni our Elah, You who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made for Yourself a Name as it is this day: we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

[16] טו Adoni, I beseech You, according to all Your righteousness, let Your anger and Your fury be turned back from Your city Yerushalem, Your holy mountain:

[17] טז For because of our sins, and the iniquities of our fathers, Yerushalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us.

[18] יז Hearken now, our Elah, unto the intercession of Your servant, and to his earnest prayer: and cause Your face to shine on Your desolate sanctuary for Your sake, Adoni.

[19] יח O my Elah, incline Your ear and hear, open Your eyes and look on our desolation, and the city which is called by Your Name: for we present not our supplication before You on account of our righteousness, but because of Your great mercies.

[20] יט Adoni, hear! Adoni, forgive! Adoni, hearken, and act! delay not, even for Your own sake, O my Elah: for Your Name is called on Your city and on Your people.

[21] כ And I was yet speaking and interceding and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people Yisrael, and presenting my supplication before HE WHO IS AND WHO WAS, my Elah, for the holy mountain of my Elah:

[22] כא And while I was yet speaking in prayer, Gabriel, the certain one whom I had seen in the vision at the commencement, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening oblation: and he gave me understanding, and spoke with me, and said, Daniel, I have now come forth to give you wisdom in understanding.

[23] At the commencement of your supplications the command came forth, and I have come to announce it, for you are much beloved, understand the command and you will understand the vision.

[24] Seventy shabuim (שבעימ) are decreed upon your people and upon your holy city, to restrain the transgression, and to end sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in righteousness olamim, and to consummate the vision and prophecy, and to anoint holy holies.

[25] Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the command to return and to build Yerushalem unto a Meshiah a Nagid, shabuim seven, and shabuim sixty: and two will return, and the square will be built, and the trench dug in troublous times.

[26] And after shabuim sixty and two a Meshiah will be cut off, and he is set to nought, and the city and the sanctuary will be destroyed together with the Nagid who comes, and his end is with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined: and he will strengthen the covenant for the many one shabua, (שבוע) and in the midst of the shabua he will cease from sacrifice and oblation, and because of the overspreading of abominations there will be desolation, even until the consummation, and what has been determined will be poured out upon the desolate.

"Our rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple the lot [‘For the Lord’] did not come up in the right hand; nor did the crimson-colored strap become white; nor did the western most light shine; and the doors of the Hekel [Temple] would open by themselves" (Soncino version, Yoma 39b).

"Forty years before the destruction of the Temple, the western light went out, the crimson thread remained crimson, and the lot for the Lord always came up in the left hand. They would close the gates of the Temple by night and get up in the morning and find them wide open" (Jacob Neusner, The Yerushalmi, p.156-157).

There was no 70 AD Yom haKippurim service because the Temple was destroyed in the Summer. The timespan for the Talmud quotes above is from Yom Kippur 29 AD to Yom Kippur 69 AD, forty years, (a year for a day, BaMidbar 14:34, Yonah 3:4, Yĥezqel 4:6).

DANIEL THE PROPHET 3

[01] In the first year of Kuros king of the Persians a matter was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was yet Beltazzar, and the matter is surely true, and a great battle, and I understood the matter, and I understood it through the mareh.

[02] In those days I Daniel was in mourning three times seven-yôm (שבע־ימ) of the yômim: I ate no pleasant bread, and no meat or wine entered into my mouth, neither an anointing did I anoint myself until the end of three times seven-yôm of the yômim.

[03] And in the twenty and fourth yōm of the rishon ĥodesh, I was beside the great river, that is, Ĥidakel:

[04] And I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a iysh-certain one clothed in fine linen, and his waist belted roundabout in fine gold, and from his midst Uphaz-Light.

[05] And his body was as it were Tarshiysh, and his countenance was as it were the appearance of lightrays, and his eyes were like lamps of fire, and his arm-branches and his feet were as the appearance of polished brass: and the voice of his speaking was as it were the voice of a multitude.

[06] And I Daniel alone saw the mareh, and the men who were with me saw not the mareh: but a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled in haste to hide themselves.

[07] And I was left by myself, and saw this great mareh: and there remained no strength in me, and my glory turned against me to corruption, and I retained no strength.

[08] And I heard the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, I was comatose upon my face, and my face was toward the earth.

[09] And behold, a hand reached through me, and set me trembling upon my knees and the palms of my hands.

[10] And he said to me, O Daniel, iysh greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upon your station: for unto you am I now sent, and when he had spoken this word I stood trembling.

[11] And he said to me, Fear not, Daniel, for from the first yōm when you set your heart to understand, and to humble your face before your Elohim, your words were heard: and I am come through your words.

[12] But Sar of the Persian dominion stood to my face twenty and one yōm, and behold, Mikael, one of the Sarim of the beginning, came to my aid: and I excelled there beside the king of Persia.

[13] And I am come to make known unto you what befalls your people in the last yômim: for the vision is yet for the yômim.

[14] And in his speaking with me, according to these words, I turned my face toward the earth, and had become tongue-tied.

[15] And behold, as it were the likeness of the hand of an adam touched my lips: and I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to the one standing before me, Adoni, because of the mareh my hinges have turned against me, and I retain no strength.

[16] And how can the servant of this Adoni speak with that Adoni? at this time there is no strength in me to stand, not even breath is left in me.

[17] And again, as it were the mareh of an adam touched me, and strengthened me:

[18] And he said, Fear not, iysh greatly beloved, shalom be unto you, be strong and be strengthened! and in his speaking with me I was strengthened, and said, Let Adoni speak, for I am strengthened.

[19] And he said, When you know why I have come to you, straightway I will return to war with Sar Persia, and when I am gone forth, behold, Sar Yawan comes.

[20] Truly I show you the chief (first) things in the writing of truth, and there is no one with me stronger than these except Mikael, your Sar:

[21] And he strengthened me in the first year of Kuros, king of the Persians, and I stood to confirm and strengthen Darius the Median.

[22] And now the truth I announce to you, behold, yet three kings shall stand for Persia, and the fourth shall accumulate greater wealth than all: but as he strengthens in his wealth he will awaken the whole dominion of Yawan.

[23] And a great king shall stand up, and shall rule a great dominion, and he shall do according to his will: but as he stands, his dominion shall broken and divided to the four winds of the heavens, but not to his posterity, nor according to the dominion which he ruled, for his dominion shall be torn away unto others separate from those.

[24] And the king of the south shall become strong, and one of his princes will be stronger than him, and the dominion which he rules will be a Rab dominion.

[25] And at the end of years they will associate together in league, and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make a compact:

[26] But the branch will not retain strength, and he will not stand, and her branch will be given up, and those who brought her, and those supporting her in those times.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 4

[01] And a shoot from her root will stand up to his station, and he shall enter into the forces thereof, and shall enter into the stronghold of the king of the north: and he will work against them and prevail.

[02] And with their Elohim, their molten images, and their precious vessels of silver and gold in captivity, he comes to the south: and he stands years above the king of the north.

[03] And he enters into the dominion of the king of the south and returns to his adamah.

[04] And his son shall be stirred up also, and shall gather a synagogue of Rabbim forces: and he comes, entering in and inundating, and passes on through, and returns, and contends against the stronghold.

[05] And the king of the south will be bitterly provoked, and shall go forth and war with him, against the king of the north, and shall withstand the Rab synagogue: and the synagogue shall be given into his hand.

[06] And having taken the synagogue, his heart shall be exalted, and he will cast down many, but shall not be strengthened by it.

[07] And the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a synagogue greater than the former: and at the end of the times of years he will come, entering therein with great forces and much wealth.

[08] And in those times Rabbim shall stand with the king of the south, and sons of the Pharizim of your people shall exalt him to establish the vision: but they will fall.

[09] And the king of the north shall come, and shall cast up a rampart, and shall capture the city fortifications: and the branches of the south will not withstand him, neither his chosen people, and there will be no strength to stand.

[10] And the one coming against him shall do according to his will, and none shall stand before him: and he will stand in Erets haTzebi, and the consummation is in his hand.

[11] And he shall set his face to enter with the might of all his dominion, and will make a compact with him, and thus he will do, he will appoint a daughter of men toward the corruption thereof, but it shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass for him:

[12] For he will turn his face toward the isles, and will capture many, but a leader will put an end to the corruption, and he will return in wrath for their reproach against him.

[13] Then he will turn his face toward the strongholds of his own land: but he will stumble, and fall, and shall not be found.

[14] And shall stand to his station one who imposes taxes on the glory of the dominion: but in days of ones he is broken, neither in anger, nor in battle.

[15] And shall stand to his station one despised, and they shall not put on him the honor of the dominion: and he comes in peace, and shall seize the dominion by flatteries.

[16] And with the force of a flood they shall be swept away from before him, and they shall be broken, and also the Nagid of the Covenant.

[17] And he shall work deceit by way of leagues made with him: and he shall ascend and become strong by few people.

[18] In peace he will enter into the richest of the provinces, and he will do what neither his fathers did, nor the fathers of his fathers: the plunder and spoil and riches he will disperse among them, and against the strongholds he will weave his machinations, even until the appointed time.

[19] And he will awaken his power, and his heart shall be against the king of the south with a great company: and the king of the south shall be provoked into war with a great company, but he shall not stand, for cunning machinations will be devised against him:

[20] And those who eat of the portions of his food shall break him, and his company shall be washed away, and the corrupt Rabbim shall fall.

[21] And these two kings shall have hearts set on evil, and at one table they shall eat and speak lies: but it shall not prosper, for yet the consummation is for the appointed time.

[22] And he shall return to his land with great wealth, and his heart shall be against the holy covenant: and in such manner he will act, and he shall return to his own land.

[23] And at the appointed time he will enter into the south: but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter:

[24] For ships of Kittim will come against him, and he will be dejected, and he shall return in fury against the holy covenant, and so shall he act: he will return, and have regard concerning those that forsake the holy covenant.

[25] And branches out of him shall be appointed to stations: and they shall pollute mikdash-sanctuary stronghold, and they shall remove the tamid-continual, and they shall appoint the abomination of desolation.

[26] And the violators of the covenant he will corrupt through flatteries: but the people who know their Elah shall be strengthened, and shall act.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 5

[01] And the Maskil of the people shall give instruction to the Rabbim, but they shall they fall by the sword, and by flame, and by captivity, and by plunder, the yômim.

[02] And in their being cast down his help shall aid the little ones: but the Rabbim shall be woven among them through flatteries.

[03] And some of the maskilim shall stumble, to refine them, and to brighten them, and to whiten them until the time of the end: for it is yet for the appointed time.

[04] And he shall do according to the will of the King, and he shall be lifted up and magnified over every mighty one, and concerning the El of Elim he shall speak things too wonderful: and he shall prosper until the consummation of the fury, for what is determined shall be done.

[05] And the Elah of his forefathers he shall not have foreknown, neither concerning the desire of women, neither concerning any Eloah: and he shall be highly exalted over all.

[06] And in his estate he shall honor Elah the Rock of above: and unto the Eloah which his forefathers knew not, he shall burden with the gold, and with the silver, and with the precious stones, and with the pleasant things.

[07] And he shall work to defend the Rock of above, the Eloah having been rejected, whom he shall acknowledge, magnifying gloriously: and he shall have dominion from among the Rabbim, and the adamah he shall apportion as the wage.

[08] And at the time of the end the king of the south will push against him, and the king of the north will storm against him with teams, and with Pharishim, and with many vessels: and he shall go forth into the countrysides, and shall pass-over:

[09] And he shall enter into Erets haTzebi, and many shall be overthrown, but these will be birth-delivered by his power: Edom, and Moab, and the firstfruit sons of Ammon.

[10] And he shall stretch forth [the power of] his hand into the lands: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

[11] And he shall have dominion in the hidden treasures, the gold and the silver, and in all the precious things of Egypt: and Lubim and Kushim are in his steps.

[12] And utterings heard shall trouble him from the sunrise and out of the north: and he shall go forth with great fury against the desolators, and the Rabbim shall be cut off.

[13] And the tent-stakes of his palace shall be driven in between the yômim, in the holy Tzebi mountain: and he comes to his consummation, and there is none to help him.

[14] And in that hour Mikael shall passover, haSar haGadol who stands over the sons of your people, and there shall be a time of tribulation such as there has never been since there was a nation until that time, and in that time your people will be birth-delivered, whosoever is found written in the sefer.

[15] And many sleeping in the adamah dust shall be awakened: those living into olam, and those to the reproach of contempt into olam.

[16] And the maskilim will shine as the light of the firmament, and those prevailing themselves of my words like the stars of the heavens into the olam and forever.

[17] But you, Daniel, close up the matters, and seal up the sefer until the appointed time of the consummation: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

[18] And I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others standing: one on this side of the bank of the Yowr, and one on that side of the bank of the Yowr.

[19] And it was said to the certain one clothed in the fine white linen, who was upon the waters of the Yowr, How long until the consummation of these too wonderful things?

[20] And I heard the certain one clothed in the fine white linen, who was upon the waters of the Yowr, and he raised his right and his left to the heavens, and swore by the Living Eternal One: Surely for an appointed time of two times and a half, and when the power of the holy people is completely broken to pieces, all these things will be finished.

[21] And I heard but I understood not, and I said, Adoni, what is the end of these things?

[22] And he said, Walk onward, Daniel, for the matters are closed and sealed up until the time of the consummation.

[23] Many shall be purified and whitened and refined: but those that are wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall understand, and the maskilim shall understand.

[24] And from the time that the tamiyd-continual is taken away, and the abomination of desolation set up: yômim a thousand two hundred and ninety.

[25 Happy is the one with patience and he who arrives at the yômim a thousand three hundred thirty and five.

[26] And you, walk onward to the consummation: for you shall rest, and shall stand to your lot at the consummation of the yômin.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 6

[01] In the third year of the dominion of Beltazzar a vision appeared unto me, I am Daniel, after what had appeared to me in the commencement.

[02] And I watched in the vision, and it came to pass in my watching that I was in the palace, Shushan, in the province of Elam: and watching in the vision, I was at Ubal Ulay.

[03] And I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, one ram stationed before the Ubal, and it had horns: and the horns were powerful, and the latter was the more powerful of the two, and the more powerful ascended afterward [or westward].

[04] And I watched the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward: and of all the beasts there was none that stood before him, and nothing was delivered from [the power of] his hand, and he did according to his will, and was magnified.

[05] And I was considering, and behold, a tzephyr he-goat of the goats coming from the west over the face of all the earth, without touching the earth: and the tzephyr had a conspicuous horn between his eyes.

[06] And he came against the ram, the baal of the two horns which I had seen stationed before the Ubal: and he rushed against him in the fury of his power.

[07] And I saw him strike the side of the ram, and he was enraged against him, and he smote the ram, and shattered his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, and he cast him down to the ground and trampled him, and there was nothing to deliver the ram from [the power of] his hand.

[08] And the tzephyr goat magnified greatly: but as he became strong the great horn was broken, and a compact of four came up beneath it toward the four winds of the heavens.

[09] And from the one of them came forth a little horn, and it magnified exceedingly toward the south, and toward the sunrise, and toward the Tzebi.

[10] And he magnified against the tzaba-host of the heavens, and he caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and he trampled them.

[11] And he magnified against the Sar Tzaba, and because of him the tamid-continual was taken away, and the abode of his mikdash-sanctuary was cast down.

[12] And a company was appointed against the tamiyd-continual through transgression, and they cast down truth to the ground, and continued, and prospered.

[13] And I heard one holy one speak, and another holy one said to the Wonderful Numberer [Palmoni] who was speaking, How long is the vision of the tamiyd and the transgression of desolation appointed, and the sanctuary and the host to be trampled?

[14] And he said to me, Until evening-morning two thousand and three hundred: then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

[15] And it came to pass when I had seen myself, Daniel, in the vision, I sought for the meaning, and behold, stationed to my face, as it were the mareh of a geber-mighty one.

[16] And I heard the voice of an Adam in the midst of Ulay, and he called out, and said, Gabriel, teach this one concerning the mareh!

[17] And he came beside my station, and in his coming I was terrified, and was fallen upon my face, and he said to me, The understanding is the son of Adam: for at the time of the consummation is the vision.

[18] And in his speaking with me I was comatose upon my face toward the ground: and he reached through me, and stood me upright to my station.

[19] And he said, Behold, I make known to you what shall come to pass in the latter end of the fury, at the appointed time of the consummation.

[20] The ram which you saw, the baal of the two horns, is the king of Media and Persia.

[21] And the tzephyr is the saiyr-goat, the king of Yawan, and the great horn which is between his eyes is the first king, and that he was broken, and four stood up in his place: four dominions shall stand up out of that nation, but not with his power.

[22] And in the latter time of their dominion, as the transgressors come to the full, a king of `Az-fierce countenance will stand up having understanding of dark sayings.

[23] And his power shall be mighty, but it is not his own power, and wondrous things he will corrupt: and he will prosper, and continue, and he will corrupt the mighty and the people of the holy ones.

[24] And because of his wisdom and prosperity deceit is in his hand, and in his heart he magnifies, and through prosperity he shall corrupt many: and against the Sar-Prince of sarim-princes he stands, and in the final end [the power of] his hand is broken.

[25] And the mareh of the evening and the morning which was told is certain: and you will close up the vision because it is for the yômim rabim.

[26] And I Daniel was afflicted, and I slept the yômim, and I arose and performed the official business of the king: and I was desolated over the mareh, and there was none who understood.

DANIEL THE PROPHET 7

[01] King Beltazzar made a great feast for a thousand Rabrabbins and drank wine before the thousand: as he tasted the wine, he ordered to bring in the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Yerushalem, that the king, his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink from them.

[02] Then they brought the vessels of gold that were taken out of the temple of the house of Elah which was at Yerushalem, and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank with them: they drank wine and praised the Elahin of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

[03] In that hour there came forth fingers of the hand of a certain one, and wrote opposite the lampstand upon the plaster of the wall of the palace of the king: and the king saw the portion of the hand that wrote.

[04] Then the countenance of the king was altered, and his thoughts terrified him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

[05] The king cried aloud to bring in the Kashdin, the Ashaphin, and the Gazerin: and the king spoke, and said to the wise men of Babel, Whosoever shall read this writing, and show me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the dominion.

[06] Then came in all the wise men of the king: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

[07] Then king Beltazzar was greatly vexed, and his countenance was altered in him, and his Rabrabbins were astonished.

[08] Then the queen, because of the words of the king and his Rabrabbins, came into the banquet house, and the queen spoke and said, O king, live into the olamin: let not your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance be changed.

[09] There is a geber in your dominion, in whom is Ruaĥ Elahin the Holy: and in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the Elahin was found in him, and he is whom king Nebuchadnezzar your father made Rab-Master of the Kashdin, Ĥartumin, Ashaphin, and Gazerin.

[10] Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and revealing dark sayings, and resolution of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king surnamed Beltazzar: now therefore, call forth Daniel, and he will show the interpretation.

[11] Then Daniel entered before the king, and the king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel who is of the sons of the captivity of Yhudah, whom my father the king brought out of Yhudah?

[12] I have heard concerning you that Ruaĥ Elahin is with you, and that light, and understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you.

[13] And now the wise men and the Ashaphin have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not show the interpretation of the matter.

[14] And I have heard concerning you, that you are able to make interpretations and dissolve doubts: now then, if you can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, you will be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the dominion.

[15] Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and your rewards to another: yet I will read the writing for the king, and I will make known to him the interpretation.

[16] Concerning you, O king, the Most High Elah gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor:

[17] And because of the majesty that He gave him, all people and nations and tongues trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive, and whom he would he set up, and whom he would he put down.

[18] But when his heart was magnified, and his mind hardened with pride, he was deposed from the throne of his dominion, and they took his glory from him.

[19] And he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild beasts: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the heaven until he knew that the Most High Elah rules in the dominion of men, and that He appoints over it whomsoever He will.

[20] And you his son, O Beltazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all these things: but have exalted yourself against the Master of the heavens, and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your Rabrabbins, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine in them:

[21] And you have praised the Elahin of silver, and gold, and brass, and iron, and wood, and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor understand, and the Elah in whose hand is your breath and all your ways, Him you have not glorified.

[22] Therefore was the part of the hand sent from Him and this writing was written.

[23] And this is the writing that is written, מנאמנאתקלופרסינ.

[24] This is the interpretation of the matter: MENE, Elah has numbered your dominion and it is finished, TEQEL, You are weighed in the balances and found wanting, PHERES, Your dominion is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

[25] Then Beltazzar gave command, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and proclaimed concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the dominion.

[26] In that night Beltazzar the king of the Kashdin was cut off.
