Holidays & PTO for Filipino Online Workers

Okay real talk muna. Pag sinabing “online job,” people assume flexible lahat. Oo, flexible nga but that doesn’t mean wala kang karapatang magpahinga.
Most of us started freelancing para makalanghap ng konting buhay, hindi para mapuyat 24/7 working multiple clients across 4 time zones (although guilty ako dito when I was just starting). Kaya kung nagtataka ka kung may holiday pay ba sa freelancing, or if you’re “allowed” to take a break, this one’s for you.
📌 REGULAR HOLIDAYS
(Christmas, New Year’s, Independence Day, etc.)
If freelancer ka with a foreign client, depende sa usapan.
→ Most clients follow their country’s holidays. So don’t expect Dec 25 off unless you clear it.
📌 SPECIAL NON-WORKING HOLIDAYS
(Mga fiesta, Chinese New Year, etc.)
No work = no pay.
Talk to your client. Hindi siya dapat awkward. Hindi rin ito “bastos.”
You’re not asking for a favor. You’re setting expectations.
You teach people how to treat you.
Clients rarely bring this up lalo na if ikaw ay “contractor” lang in their eyes. So ikaw ang kailangan magtanong:
“Do you offer paid time off?”
“What holidays do you observe?”
“Would it be okay if I take [date] off? I can finish deliverables earlier.”
Some generous clients offer paid PH holidays or even birthday leaves. Pero usually, it’s more like:
You manage your own time
You’re expected to be responsible
So ayun. Pahinga ka lang kung kelan kaya. Pero magpaalam ng maaga.
Hi [Client Name], just checking in—are there any holidays you observe for the team this month? In the Philippines, [insert holiday] is coming up and I wanted to know if I can take that day off. Totally okay if not—I just want to manage the workload accordingly.
Or kapag gusto mong mag-leave:
Hey [Client Name], I’m planning to take a personal day on [insert date]. I’ll make sure my tasks are covered beforehand. Let me know if you need anything scheduled in advance.
Short. Professional. Walang guilt.
PTO isn’t a luxury.
Run. 😂
