While interning at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in the Spring of 2017 I helped design the Smithsonian’s Material Culture Forum. I collaborated with my supervisor, Curator Betty Belanus, to bring speakers from around the Smithsonian and the D.C. area to discuss medicinal plants in various contexts. In addition to planning the event, I wrote a blog post for the Center’s Website.

Sample Grant Proposal

This is a grant that I prepared without submitting, in the Fall of 2017 as part of Dr. Tim Frandy’s Cultural Conservation course. The grant is written for New York Humanities to fund the creation of a walking tour of Albany, New York. The grant materials include the questions/narrative, budget, and budget notes.

Lesson Plan

This lesson plan was created for inclusion in a Traveling Trunk to be used by the Kentucky Museum to help teachers and students learn about Bosnian Culture. The lesson plan is part of a larger unit, Bosnian Home and Family Life, which was created collaboratively by Dr. Tim Evans's Folklore and Education Class. The plan which I designed is Part A: Bosnian Coffee Ceremony

Academic Paper

“Deer? “No, Beer!”: Perceptions of Adirondack Identity in Regional Breweries”

This is an ethnographic paper that I wrote in the Fall of 2017 for Dr. Ann K. Ferrell’s Foodways course. Using interviews with members of the Craft Beer and Tourism Industries, I explored the ways in which Craft Breweries utilize an Adirondack Aesthetic to resist state-wide notions of what it means to live in the Adirondack State Park.

Transcription

This is a transcription of an interview conducted in the Fall of 2016 as a student in Dr. Erika Brady’s Folklore Fieldwork course. The fieldwork and transcription were components of the Ethnographic Overview and Assessment of Mammoth Cave National Park. The interview was conducted by Kay Westhues with Bethany Bryant and Sandra Wilson.
