ANJCL

ANJCL Activities

  1. ANJCL has conducted 3 surveys in Australia (in 2019, 2020, and 2021) on the Japanese language learning environment for speakers of Japanese as Community Language, with support from The Japan Foundation.

  2. ANJCL has been delivering online seminars since 2020 on different aspects of Japanese as Community Language, with support from the Japan Foundation Sydney and University of New South Wales. The past seminars are accessible on VOD.

  3. ANJCL has its own Facebook group which informs its members of upcoming events and shared concerns related to Japanese as Community Language.

  4. ANJCL publishes its newsletters 4 to 5 times per year.  The newsletter features a variety of articles that inform KEISHOGO communities, such as reports from latest KEISHOGO events, book reviews, interviews with KEISHOGO youths, reports on Japanese playgroups, and many more.

  5. ANJCL has developed Watashi-go Portfolio: Australian Edition and is promoting its use in family settings, community groups, and schools across Australia.

  6. ANJCL runs Japanese reading groups for young children in collaboration with Japan Foundation Sydney Library.

  7. ANJCL members are actively engaged in research and educational activities as well as community activities that help promote better understanding of KEISHOGO and development of supportive KEISHOGO communities.

Sunflower Logo Concept Statement

Hana Thomson

hanathomson(at)gmail.com

The imagery of sunflowers was chosen to represent the Australian Network for Japanese as Community Language, for two reasons. First, because they feature Australia’s national colours of green and gold, and second, because they are known for always facing the sun. They symbolise the positive attitude, strength and resilience of those within the community.

Additionally, the sunflowers are smiling, and depicted holding one another’s hands, representing the key theme of connection – connection between parents, children, friends; between generations; connections that already exist and those that will continue to be made in the future.
