Drawing animated stickers has always been something creative that I wanted to try. I have always been a fan of various popular stickers such as QUBY, Pepe, Milk & Mocha, and Anonymous Life on both Whatsapp and Telegram. Even as a young child, I used to collect physical stickers and pasted them onto the transparent folders in a book file to share with my friends. Now that technology has become more advanced, collecting stickers have been made easier and there are many more to choose from. However, the traditional sticker collecting does not offer what online sticker collection has — animated stickers. Of course, making animated stickers are easier said than done. Making the decision to place my time and effort into drawing was also in consideration of my arts background. As I have almost 10 years of experience in traditional Chinese Painting and Chinese Calligraphy, I believe that starting an artistic project would be in line with my interest. Although I do enjoy expressing my creativity through traditional arts, this is also my first time learning how to draw online, which is why I have to plan out which digital tools I want to use as a beginner.
The tricky part came when I started planning what theme I want to go for the animated stickers. As much as I would like to incorporate Chinese Calligraphy into the stickers, it is often difficult to replicate traditional arts through digital media, much less making an animated sticker on it. Therefore, I was more inclined to make characters or animals that have expressions and symbolised something meaningful.
Following this line of thought, I was inspired to draw my experiences in NTU. The animated stickers will follow the NTU theme through various iconic animals that depict what hall life was like for me and my area of interests which I believe would resonate with many students too.
I started learning Chinese Calligraphy back in primary school, where it was offered as a Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). Rather than joining the Art Club, my interest lies in Chinese Calligraphy as I was enamoured with the way brushes were held, and how control and patience were heavily emphasised during the practice sessions. Beautiful traditional art can come to life simply with just a brush, ink, and a bowl of water (to dilute the ink). I brought my passion for Chinese Calligraphy to my secondary school, joining the same CCA and under the same instructor. Now, Chinese Calligraphy is no longer an obligation to fulfil, but a spiritual journey as I cultivate patience, tranquility, and clarity in my thinking.
I decided to download Procreate as it was one of the most reliable and professional app for creating digital art. It has the function to auto record what I have drawn on the canvas and export the playback into a time lapse video. Furthermore, as I have recently invested in an iPad and Apple Pencil, I find it valuable to buy Procreate for drawing purposes.
This is a mobile application that allow users to create their own stickers. Users can also download sticker packs from that are uploaded. The app does not limit animated stickers from being uploaded into the sticker pack for free.
iMovie will be used to edit the videos of my creation process. It is also beginner friendly and would be helpful in helping me get familiarised with the tools. This is the first time I will be learning how to edit a video too.
I will use YouTube to source for tutorials on how to use Procreate and how I can create an animated sticker through the app. Also, I will edit all the exported videos from Procreate into one video using iMovie and upload it on YouTube.
