Animal Care Turangi is a registered charitable trust based in Turangi, New Zealand (Charity #CC23228). We provide community-based animal rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming for cats and dogs. Our services are focused on the Central Plateau region, including Turangi, Tokaanu, and surrounding rural communities.
We offer subsidised cat desexing vouchers when funding is available. These vouchers require a $30 contribution per cat and are offered on a first come, first served basis.
At certain times of the year, we also partner with PetFirst Turangi to offer free community cat desexing, made possible through grant funding from the NZCAT Desexing Project Award. These opportunities are limited and only available when funding allows.
Dog desexing support is available on a case-by-case basis, generally through referral from PetFirst Turangi.

While we don’t service Taupō directly, we are one of the closest no-kill rescues in the region. Cats and kittens can be viewed online and adopted by appointment from our centre or foster homes. View available animals here:

We are currently taking a break from dog intakes and adoptions due to a shortage of available volunteers to support their care. As a volunteer-run organisation, we rely on dedicated foster carers and helpers to safely manage every animal. We hope to reopen our dog programme in future when the right support is in place. In the meantime, please consider adopting from Taupo District Council.
We follow a compassionate euthanasia policy in line with the SPCA. Euthanasia is only considered in cases of extreme suffering, where veterinary advice confirms there is no quality of life or no safe outcome for the animal.
Yes. We adopt to approved homes across the Central North Island and beyond!
No. We are a fully independent, volunteer-run organisation. We are not affiliated with the SPCA or any government agency, and rely solely on community support and donations.
We consider each surrender case carefully, based on space and resources. Priority is given to animals in urgent need. Please message or email us with details. We may also refer you to other nearby organisations.
No, we are not a walk-in shelter. Our centre is open by appointment only. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
We are based in Turangi, but we assist animals and adopters from nearby areas like Taumarunui, Tongariro, National Park, and southern Lake Taupō. We are often the closest rescue option for many rural communities.
