This module was all about Digital Privacy and Security/Saftey in web browsing. The assignment was to use google news and research cyber security incidents in the news. Check them out below!!
This article published April 20, 2023, in "City Life", lists a number of Stephen Starr restaurant brands in New York City and "how a major ransomware attack has suspended gift card sales at all of them for more than a week" (Fiorillo, 2023). NCR corporation was the first point of attack. Point of sales, bar code scanners etc were effected therefore. "The ransomware attack affected the technology all Stephen Starr restaurants use to sell gift cards in person, at the restaurants and also on the company’s website" (Fiorillo, 2023). The article was presented amongst an array of other topics covered by the writer including music, sports and politics. The writers contact information was included at the end. I would consider some truth but definitely check for accuracy.
*Prevention can come from regularly updating software and installing antivirus software*
This article published April 19 2023, in "The Press Democrat", details an event where "police were called to investigate theft from a collection box in Santa Rosa" (Edwards, 2023). Witness statements and surveillance led to uncovering an identity theft operation. The article gave names and ages of alleged suspects that were cited and arrested. The article was presented as a stand alone report and stated that it was a developing story. The author left contact information at the end. I'd be inclined to think there was truth to the report but would check for accuracy in details.
Overall I became aware of my own digital privacy concerns. Upon completion of cyber security training I got a certificate. Now I can identify certain cyber attacks, practice safe browsing and protect my own privacy and data, better than before.
