Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
Within the CCC ecosystem, some ways faculty can meet this principle are by:
A great class leaves you with the knowledge and skills to continue your journey individually and as part of a community. The four classes that I took as part of this project did exactly that. I learned the theory and practice to grow as a well-rounded online instructor. My growth won't stop after taking another class or going to another conference or workshop.
What better way is there to model the growth mindset for my students than by sharing my own ongoing academic and professional educational journey with them?
During the next academic year, I plan to complete the following courses:
After finishing the four classes required for this project, I completed two more: Intro to Teaching with Canvas and Intro to Online Teaching and Learning.
As a relatively new Canvas user, I appreciated the practical skills and ideas from the Intro to Canvas class. In particular, I benefited from having my own Canvas sandbox course to create sample assignments as an instructor.
In the Intro to Online Teaching and Learning, I was happy to work on assignments that will be very useful when I teach online in the fall such as the "Welcome Letter, the "Week 1 Announcement," and the "Dear Struggling Student Letter."
This one-page letter can be modified with the specific details of the course and sent to students about a week before the class officially starts. This sets a welcoming tone and gives students time to prepare for the first week of class. This can significantly decrease the level of anxiety of all students but in particular those who are new to the college-going culture.
While taking the Intro to Canvas class, I had the opportunity to experiment by creating an Orientation Module in my sandbox.
Based on all the courses I've taken from @ONE, I now have a clear picture of how I want my Canvas site to be organized. I aim to give students a rich, engaging, and learner-centered experience housed in a well-designed Canvas site and supported by great pedagogy.
