Coverage

  • Commercial banks operating in the 34 OECD countries, 1999-2014

Description

  • The ownership information was manually collected from the Bureau van Dijk (BvD) ownership database, banks and central banks’ websites, and newspaper articles obtained from Factiva. The data was further cross-checked with the Claessens and Van Horen (2015) Bank Ownership Database. However, the bank ownership database I compiled differs from theirs in three main aspects:
  1. While the Claessens and Van Horen (2015) database indicates whether a certain bank is foreign-owned or not and, if applicable, the respective home country of the parent bank, I obtain information on who the actual owner of this foreign-owned bank is, and its respective Bankscope/Orbis Bank Focus identifier.
  2. While Claessens and Van Horen (2015) report the country of ownership based on direct ownership, I consider the ultimate bank owner based on a 50% threshold.
  3. While Claessens and Van Horen (2015) provide data over the period 1995-2013 in 139 countries, I collect more granular information for commercial banks operating in the 34 OECD countries from 1999 to 2014.
