Overview
Overview
TutorD LLC is a communication and educational software that focuses on revolutionizing the way scholars learn as well as succeed throughout their time in the K-12 school system. The software focal point is scholars who face challenges in urban settings. They aim to expand student resources surrounding STEM. Their platform is designed to be nontraditional, thoughtful, adaptive, equitable, and individualized based on the scholar's experience.
The current software includes a list of educator and scholar functionalities but a lack of administrative features and functions. There is a need for an administrator feature to better assist educators and scholars, overview classroom success, and connect with scholars.
Research
I worked alongside a team of UX Researchers and designers to design administrative features and functions for the current software. During the research period, we utilized user journeys, a pre-established dashboard, and an onboarding process designed for educators.
My team and I started by conducting a competitive audit on software similar to TurtorD such as Schoology, Kahoot, Quizlet, and Arist in order to get a grasp of UX/UI design common practices within educational platforms.
After completing the competitive audit we conducted multiple rounds of usability testing to further improve our base layout to expand on the prototype.
Based on our usability tests we gathered that participants wanted to see the progression status of individual students once viewing classrooms, an ability to compare quarter/quarter, year/year, and month/month statistics for the unit statistics, as well as a classroom page that shows student data for the current school year.
Design
Next, we created sketches for updated as well as new page designs within the software.
Some Key Focus Areas were:
Rostering (features to add/remove admins, teachers, and students)
Adding/removing organizations
Generating/viewing reports that contain (billing reports, teacher and students engagement levels, grades/scores)
Ability to send links to scholarship providers
During the wireframing creation, we merged the design pallet that was already on the software as well as inspiration drawn from our competitive audit. We created an emphasis on the familiarity of permissions to grant as administrators and implemented an advanced reports area designed to track students' performance and progress as well as track, prioritize, and mobilize student progress on a unit statistics page. We had to consider what the admin might be using the reporting page for, and who/how they will be showing these reports. Another design we focused on was the dashboard.
The goal was to provide all the information an admin would like to see on the face front without overwhelming the user. We did this by creating containers with a brief list of information as well as a view all button to expand on each feature when needed.

Outcome/Next Steps
Next steps include:
Expanding on Unit Statistics. This will allow admin’s to have a better understanding on student performance and how teachers can best teach their students.
Creating dashboard functions for scholars, educators, and parents. This will allow user’s to have more freedom with the interface which will in return allow for an improved user experience.
Expanding on the full user experience for other admin functions. The question sets, courses, settings haven't been created for the admin’s page and so creating it can be a great next step to have a better understanding of the prototype and how it comes together.
Lastly, Further usability testing with other administrators will also allow for a more improved TutorD prototype.
