I wanted to become a peer mentor because I want to help the incoming students with their transition into college. I think that having a good peer mentor can help make the change easier and more welcoming. I want to provide students an opportunity to have extra support during a time that can be the most challenging. Becoming a peer mentor would be a great experience not only for my mentees but also for myself by pushing me further to develop my communication and adaptability skills.
As a digital portfolio peer mentor, I worked alongside integrated coach Christina Mayes. During this position, I helped first year students begin to develop their digital portfolios for the first time. This was an opportunity to help navigate the beginning process of showcasing these students on a digital platform. I was able to support my mentees by creating and refining their pages. I also had the opportunity to work with other university students at different stages in their education career and was able to help provide feedback and allow for these students to develop their portfolios further. I was able to help students reflect their skills and achievements but also communicate who they are as a person and how they want that version of themselves to be showcased digitally.
As a career readiness peer mentor, I worked alongside integrated coaches Christina Mayes and Stacey Poe. During this position, I helped students further develop resumes and cover letters so they felt more prepared and confident when applying to jobs. I collaborated with students on digital platforms such as Handshake, LinkedIN, and digital portfolios. This position helped me showcase my leadership and creative skills. I also had be to adaptive because I never knew what types of help was needed and stage they were at in their process.
