Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is rooted in constructivist and cognitive learning theories, underpinned by the understanding that students construct knowledge through active engagement, reflection, and interaction with their environment, wherever it may be. I believe in adapting my teaching approach to the diverse needs of my students while continuing my professional development on current educational theories, trends, and best practices. My teaching revolves around creating an environment that fosters active participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. I use various strategies to engage students, such as project-based learning, discussions, and authentic real-world applications of concepts and topics. I actively encourage student collaboration and discussion to enhance learning through peer interactions. I continuously aim to cultivate a community of learners who actively collaborate and construct their understanding of the subject matter.

Central to my teaching approach is the promotion of critical thinking skills. I design learning experiences that challenge students to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information. Through these activities, students learn content and how to think critically, make informed decisions, and solve complex problems – skills crucial for success in the ever-evolving world. I envision specific learning outcomes aligned with each course or module during the design and delivery. The learning outcomes encompass not only the mastery of content knowledge but also the development of necessary transferable skills such as communication, creativity, diversity, and adaptability. My assessments are varied and include formative assessments, real-world projects, group assessments, reflection, and summative assessments, which ensure a comprehensive understanding of student progress and achievement of learning goals.

Beyond the classroom, I am committed to sharing my knowledge and experiences with fellow educators. Educating educators is central to all my roles at UNMC. This includes mentoring relationships, collaborating on curriculum development, sharing best practices and learning experience guidance, and leading professional development sessions. I believe in a culture of lifelong learning among educators, encouraging new and seasoned educators to explore innovative teaching methods and refine their practices based on the latest research and insights.

In conclusion, my teaching philosophy emphasizes student-centered learning, critical thinking, inclusivity, and student engagement. I am dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe, nurturing learning environment where students and participants thrive. Where they are equipped with the content knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in our ever-changing world. My commitment extends to being a part of the professional growth of my peers, ensuring that the impact of effective teaching practices reverberates throughout the UNMC and the educational community.
