Fragments of trauma,
Scurry behind me,
Like a night stalker,
With haunted memories.
Materials: Terracotta clay, acrylic, wax, rope, mod roc, oil pastels, and other mixed mediums.
December 2022
This piece was presented in UWE Year 3 Fine Art show alongside many talented artists' work.
I aimed to try and capture how traumatic experiences continue throughout life, and how these are all kind of 'threaded together'. My piece contains writing I did during times of distress or love, showcasing how a relationship has its ups and downs. The sculptures represent 'parts of yourself' being lost due to emotional trauma. I wanted this piece to have a nostalgic feel to it hence the candles and the wax dripping on the canvases, the piece is quite alarming but mixed with this nostalgic appearance I've tried to give it, it brings a sense of familiarity of this experience and feeling. This piece is very different from my usual work, however, I was ambitious about exploring other materials and finding better ways to express things that are particularly hard to paint. I am interested in the connection the materials have to the body, working with things like clay helps me in grounding myself when things are particularly stressful, which is why I'm beginning to take an interest in working in ceramics for my next project/s.
