“The Current Common Household Objects of a Pandemic” (2021)

My still life painting for this project is based on an ensemble of different common objects kept in a lot of people’s houses thanks to the pandemic. I intended it to be sort of documentation of our time (the pandemic), as well as a sort of demonstration of my own personal objects that I keep with me in my house and bag. I started off this project by taking a photo of the sanitizing wipes in the classroom container in the class (and funny thing, I have the exact same ones at my house), and a mask, but it wasn’t enough. So, I added a couple of hand sanitizer bottles and a VapoRub bottle I had in my bag, and I put it together to be organized the way it currently is in the painting. The composition of the objects is on purpose, the more usual household objects kept for preventing sickness or helping cure sickness are on the left (I put the usual objects on the left and the mask on the right to sort of demonstrate or emphasize a passage or development of time from left to right, left being the old and right being the new). I tried my best to use bland colours and make the environment as boring and lifeless to give you the feeling that you’re in a hospital or are looking at something that seems to be in a hospital. I put texture paste in some edges and lines of the objects to give, obviously, more texture and a different feel to the painting that gives the eye a little something else to look at or notice, and maybe touch.
