Supporting the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair
The American Meteorological Society's Smoky Mountain Chapter has supported the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair for the past 20 years through monetary donations to the fair itself, as well as sponsoring several monetary awards for deserving science fair projects in both the Junior and Senior categories. The AMS-SMC chapter gives awards annually for the best projects involving Atmospheric Sciences in both the Junior and Senior categories.
The AMS-SMC chapter also has the Robert Lind Miller Memorial Award. Robert Lind "Bob" Miller was a scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Energy and Environmental Sciences Division who passed away in August, 2007. Bob was a Meteorologist and an Air Quality Specialist known for his excellent documentation and presentation skills that showed his work in its best light. Thus, this award is reserved for projects that not only demonstrate excellence in research in the field of Atmospheric Sciences, but also in organization and documentation of data collected, and conveying those findings in an excellently written report. It is in this spirit that the AMS-SMC has established the Robert Lind Miller memorial award for deserving competitors of the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair.
