Coral Health & Monitoring

University of Queensland's CoralWatch Coral Health & Monitoring Partnership

Climate change, global warming, ocean acidification, and environmental effects such as sea level rise have become the main concern of researchers and scientists in the twenty-first century.

To better understand how these phenomena impact coral reef ecosystems, we have partnered with the University of Queensland's CoralWatch Coral Health & Monitoring program to educate divers and snorkelers about coral bleaching and engage in citizen science data collection.

During classroom and field dives, participants will learn how to assess coral health and collect monitoring data using the published CoralWatch system. Upon the completion of this program, divers and snorkelers will submit their data to the University of Queensland's CoralWatch database to help scientists monitor and study coral bleaching, global warming, and climate change.

The program includes a classroom session followed by a two tank SCUBA dive. All classroom education and research activities are facilitated by the professional scientists and marine biologists from the Amoray Marine Conservation Team.

Completion of this course allows you to contribute to both coral reef conservation and it also certifies you as a PADI CoralWatch Coral Health & Monitoring Specialist.
