Pienza is a small town in central Tuscany, in the province of Siena. For its irrefutable artistic and historical beauty, in 1996 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. It is located in the wonderful and green Val d'Orcia, a few kilometers from the centers of San Quirico d'Orcia and Castiglione. There are many reasons why it is worth visiting Pienza: its history, monuments and food and wine. Pienza began its development in the fifteenth century, by will of Pope Pius II who was born there. From this event numerous churches and palaces were erected which are still visible today: the marvelous Piazza Pio II, the famous square square on which they overlook, the Duomo, the Casa dei Canonici, the Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Borgia, the Church of San Francesco and the Town Hall. The Parish Church of Corsignano should not be forgotten with its cylindrical tower and the Byzantine nativity scene carved on an architrave. Another important tradition in Pienza is food and wine: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Bianco Valdichiana but also the famous Chianina, porcini mushrooms and pici are part of this territory.
