My all-time favorite marine mammal! A harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) watches our boat in the typical 'banana' pose on a kelp-covered rock.

Megaptera novaeangliae surfaces to breathe between feeding on plankton using her baleen. Guess what kind of whale she is!

A humpback whale surfaces in Resurrection Bay, and man... what a view.

Whales 'fluke' (seen here with their tail out of water) when taking a nosedive down into deeper waters.

This photo (and the next) are used to identify the individual...

...Each individual humpback can be recognized using fluke patterns and scarring. The humpback we found is named Dove!

Here's another snapshot of the same whale, whose exhale through her blowhole is so forceful it creates mist.

This sea otter was so relaxed with fishing boats navigating around him to get back into Homer Harbor, Alaska. He didn't mind one bit.

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) get their color from their herbivorous diet. All photos taken from >50 yards (might be blurry).

Diving down and laying on the sand or above the corals allowed me to stay out of the way and watch biota like this Chelonia mydas in action.

Chelonia mydas are unlike most other sea turtles and eat seagrasses and algae that grows on and around the reef. This one rests far below me

Corals like this one have a symbiotic relationship with algae called zooxanthellae. Coral bleaching occurs when these algae leave...

...the corals due to environmental stressors such as high temperature or ocean acidity. The algae can return if the environment stabilizes.
