At AMBA, we are equally committed to fostering an environment where beginner and intermediate athletes can cultivate their passion and growth, enabling them to compete alongside peers from their community and neighbouring organizations. To support these goals, we group athletes according to skill level and conduct tryouts for those seeking higher levels of competition and opportunities for travel. For experienced athletes, we are equipping them to compete at advanced levels of basketball, with an emphasis on Division 2-3 standards.
The formation of teams—both competitive and regular season—is contingent upon the number of player registrations and the availability of qualified coaches. Historically, competitive teams have been formed at the U12 level and above. The 2024-2025 fall season will serve as a pilot year to assess the necessity and effectiveness of introducing a U10 competitive team in alignment with AMBA’s mission.
Yes! Anyone can play for AMBA regardless of their postal code or province.
There are numerous ways to contribute to AMBA, and prior basketball experience is not required. Volunteers are needed for various roles including scorekeeping, operating the score clock, assisting with the canteen, seeking sponsorships and donations, and coordinating team schedules.
Our spring league offers a recreational and welcoming environment, making it an excellent opportunity to become involved as an assistant coach. The commitment is manageable, with no travel or practices required—only scrimmage games are scheduled.
We recognize that financing basketball opportunities may present challenges, and our goal is to support you in ensuring that your athletes can access the sport. Please feel free to reach out to us via email so we can discuss how we may assist you in making basketball more accessible for your athlete.
At the U6/U8 level, programming focuses primarily on skill development and in-house scrimmages; as such, teams in these divisions do not travel.
Competitive teams, on the other hand, should expect to travel greater distances than regular season teams and to participate in multiple tournaments, which frequently require overnight hotel accommodations. Membership on a competitive team requires a strong commitment to attend all games and tournaments.
Regular season teams routinely travel to away games, commonly within Cumberland County or Sackville, NB. Depending on the coach’s network, additional tournaments in locations such as Pictou or Antigonish may also be scheduled. All teams are encouraged to make their best effort to participate in the Halifax Provincials at the season’s conclusion, which often necessitates an overnight stay.
AMBA adheres to the Basketball Nova Scotia fair play regulations for age groups U6 through U12. Beginning at the U14 level, these specific fair play rules no longer apply, highlighting the importance of forming teams with players of similar skill levels.
When competing against teams from New Brunswick, AMBA follows Basketball New Brunswick rules, which differ in terms of fair play guidelines, ball size, and pressing regulations. To ensure equitable competition with New Brunswick teams—who do not observe the same fair play standards—AMBA is not required to implement fair play rules unless the coach determines otherwise.
We recognize that many athletes participate in multiple sports concurrently, and we understand that scheduling conflicts may arise. To ensure optimal team placement, we ask that families indicate at the time of registration if their child will have frequent absences due to other sporting commitments. This allows us to assign them to a team that can best accommodate fluctuating attendance.
Please note, for competitive teams, a minimum attendance rate of 90% is required. Therefore, we strongly advise against enrolling in two sports that have overlapping practice or game schedules, as this may impact team performance and player development.
Certainly. School sports and gym times take priority over AMBA activities, and we make every effort to avoid scheduling conflicts.
Fall registration typically takes place at the beginning of September, with the program running through March or April. The Spring League is scheduled from April to June.
AMBA collaborates with both the Axe-Men and Thunder Elite, co-hosting a variety of camps and events. The Axe-Men camp is usually held in August, while Thunder Elite offers camps throughout the year. This year, we are pleased to announce that AMBA will introduce its own fall camp.
U6-U18 teams are established based on birth year.

We hold the AMBA to high standards and encourage you to do the same. Your feedback is important to us, and we welcome any constructive criticism or concerns you may have. This year, we’re emphasizing the structure of our teams: Elite Teams, B Teams, and C Teams. While not every player will be placed on an elite roster, we strongly encourage all athletes to remain committed and continue playing. Growth takes time, and staying involved gives players the opportunity to improve and potentially earn a spot on a higher-tier team next season.
Important Note: Elite Teams require a significantly higher level of commitment, including increased travel, more frequent practices, and competitive play. If you already know that your child will not be able to commit to an elite team, we kindly ask that you notify AMBA ahead of time. This helps us streamline team placements and avoid unnecessary reshuffling. You are still required to attend tryout/evaluation dates to be placed on an appropriate team. You can let us know your wishes at : Amherstminorbasketball@gmail.com
We understand that some families may be considering a refund if their child isn’t placed on their preferred team or if there are time conflicts with other sports. Once team practice schedules are released, we ask that families make this decision as early as possible so we can adjust rosters and ensure teams are balanced and supported.
Last season, we experienced a high number of late cancellations—many due to players prioritizing hockey or other sports commitments, and others because players were not placed on the teams they had hoped for. These dropouts left several teams short-handed and created challenges for coaches and teammates. We’re working hard to avoid that this year and ask for your help in keeping teams strong and consistent.
