Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Türkmenistan) is a landlocked country in Central Asia bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. The post-Soviet country is known for vast desert landscapes, its rich Turkic culture, and its abysmally poor human rights record. Its capital is Ashgabat, and the majority of its people are Turkmen-speaking Muslims.
