Russia is the largest country in the world. It borders North Korea, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, Finland, and the unrecognized states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It shares maritime borders with Japan and the United States, and currently occupies around 20% of the territory of Ukraine.

Russia started out as the Kievan Rus', and later transformed into the Russian Empire, the RSFSR of the Soviet Union, and eventually the modern-day Russian Federation.
