When and where will the headstone be unvieled?
The project is planned tie in with the 125 year anniverary of Hillsborough. The date has not been set but we anticipate unvieling the headstone in September 2024. Ambrose is buried in Burngreave Cemetry.
Why should I donate to the campaign when I have not heard of Langley?
Sheffield Wednesday have an amazing history and by backing our project it will send out a message that you recognise, care for and want to celebrate that history. Maybe this will lead to other people having the confidence to create other events and memorials that recognise the history and the players that you are more familiar with.
We also recognise that this project will not appeal to all supporters of the club. We hope that even if the project hasn't connected with you that you at still appreciate that we are attempting to do something positive that others will enjoy.
The £4500 target is a lot of money for a headstone, why will it cost so much?
This is our top end target and represents the cost of a high quality headstone with a design that is more involved in terms of design and detailing. Our bottom end target of £2200 will eable us to complete our project but with a more modest headstone. We will happy with any outcome that results in a new headstone for Ambrose, but we want to be ambitious and create a headstone that is also a worthy monument to the early history of Sheffield Wednesday.
Will you spend the money on anything else?
We will be producing a commemorative booklet that will be available when the headstone is unvieled. All donors will be able to free claim a copy at the event or by paying a small additional postage charge via this website. We hope that the booklet will also be available in the Club Shop.
What if you fail to raise enough money?
In the first instance we will try to purchase a low specification headstone. We will work with Steve Roche to see if he can produce a small headstone for the money that raised. If it is not possible to work with Steve then we will investigate more commertial headstone options.
If we fail to raise enough money to complete the project we will use all donations to purchase matchday tickets for Pupil Premium pupils and their families from Schools with an S6 postcode.
What if you exceed your target?
We have other ideas that we could add to the project and a lot will depend on how much money we raise. There is the possibility of producing an exhibition in Sheffield of photographs and creating an event to tell the story of Langley's 4 seasons as Captain of Sheffield Wednesday where he led them to become 2nd Division Champions in his fist Season as captain and then to become English League Champions in 1902-03.
Any excess money will be used to purchase match day tickets for Pupil Premium pupils and their families from Schools with an S6 postcode.
How can I help you other than donating money?
All help is very welcome. Please get in touch with any ideas that you have. We are hoping to do bucket collections and volunteers to support us with this would be fantastic. We are also looking for local buisnesses to purchase adverts on this website and in our commemorative booklet. If you know any buisnesses that would be interested in supporting the project in this way then please share our project and website with them.
Everyone is welcome to attend the unvieling of the headstone whether they have donated or not.
