Located in Hong Kong and designed by Mott MacDonald, the Tsing Ma Bridge is named after the two island it connect and when it was finished in 1997, it was the second longest expansion bridge in existence.
In 2022, it is ranked as the 16-longest expansion bridge but, because it was designed to also accommodate rail traffic, it is considered to be the longest expansion bridge of its kind. After five years of construction, it was finally ready for traffic in 1997.
This 135 ft. wide bridge has a lot to offer. The deck has three lanes in each direction and the lower level has two rail tracks and maintenance access and traffic lanes that are used when the bridge deck is closed to traffic when there is danger due to an active typhoon.
The bridge was named after Tsing Yi and Ma Wan, the two islands connected to it and it was built across the Ma Wan Channel. Thanks to links, the passengers can go all the way to the Hong Kong International Airport. With a length of 4,518 ft and a height of 676 ft, the bridge is the longest bridge in the world that also carry rail traffic.
The Tsing Ma Bridge is popular as a tourist attraction and it has become a 'top of the list' scenic spot for visitors as well as a landmark. The Lantau Link Visitor Center and Viewing Platform is located at the northwest corner of Tsing Yi Island, near Tsing Yi. Visitors see the Ting Kau Bridge and Kap Shui Mun Bridge from the Scenery Viewing Platform.
Tsing Ma Bridge is also visible from the Airport Core Program Exhibition Center, more than a mile away. The initial design in 1982 was redesigned in 1989 to make room for the three-lane dual highway and the weight of the airport railway. The redesign was inspired by the Forth Bridge in Scotland and the Severn Bridge in England.
