The Brooklyn Bridge is owned by the New York Department of Transportation and it crosses over the East River to connect the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. When it was completed on May 24, 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and it was named the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, in 1915, it was officially renamed the Brooklyn Bridge.
Construction started in 1870. John A. Roebling was the designer along with input from his son, Washington Roebling. Along the way, there were problems about the design that delay the progress many times. As soon as the Brooklyn Bridge was finished, it became an instant tourist attraction and people came from all over to get a look at this newest addition to the New York landscape.
The prominent pointed arch, stone towers are described as neo-Gothic thanks to their design. The arches are 278 ft. high and they were built using limestone from Clark Quarry, the granite blocks are from Valenhaven Island, Maine and the cement is from Rosendale, New York
As early as 1800, citizens and officials realized the need for a bridge because at the time the only way to get across the river was by ferry. Brooklyn and New York submitted their proposals to build one and some of the ideas even suggested a tunnel running underground as a way to connect the two boroughs.

When the Brooklyn Bridge was completed it had only two 8ft wide lanes that allowed horse-drawn carriages to cross but soon after, in 1922, motor vehicles were not allowed on the bridge.
The early 1950s brought changes that were greatly needed. More lanes were added and a dedicated bike lane was given its own space. Now, there are five lanes for vehicles and one for non-motor vehicles.
