Karan Johar's Dharma Productions along with Phantom Films, which is run by four filmmakers - Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena, announced that they would make a romantic comedy together. Meena Iyer of The Times of India gave it 3.5/5 stars, stating, "Hasee Toh Phasee is for the romantics who like their martinis stirred not shaken. It was passionate and compelling, almost to make me wish that they were a real life couple and that alone becomes the winning shot."[23]A review from India Today rated it with 3/5 stars, stating, "Hasee Toh Phasee is a refreshing, much-needed entry in the contemporary romcom genre, which has lately seen a series of uninspiring films. Tushar Joshi of Daily News and Analysis gave the movie with 3/5 stars, writing, "The lead pair of Chopra and Malhotra make Hasee Toh Phasee enjoyable and believable.[25] This odd pairing works only because these two actors take an effort to play their characters with utmost sincerity. Watch it if you want to see a different take on modern day romance. Hasee Toh Phasee is worth a watch for a solid act put together by its lead pair.".[26]

I love Hasee Toh Phasee and I think that it's a very underrated movie. However, I can't help but feel that it was a little harsh on it's view on depression. In the movie Parineeti's character is depressed and to cope she takes anti-depression pills. At around the climax of thr movie Sidharth Malhotra's character says that it's an act of cowardice to take those pills. I understand that it's the mentality of millions of people around the world and that he was just trying to explain that she shouldn't rely completely on those pills but I feel as if that could have been worded and depicted differently. Does anyone else feel that way or am I too critical?

Anurag has previously talked about how he had roped in Sushant for Hasee Toh Phasee but he went ahead and signed a three film deal with Yash Raj Films. His first film with them was Shuddh Desi Romance co-starring Parineeti Chopra. However, Anurag has now said that Parineeti earlier did not want to work with Sushant.

The promos of Hasee Toh Phasee looked painfully generic. Despite the mention of Anurag Kashyap, Vikram Motwane and Karan Johar in the credits, the film looked completely unremarkable. Which is good reason to fire the guy responsible for the publicity campaign because Hasee Toh Phasee is nothing like its promos.

The dull songs and the unexciting lead actor in particular make Hasee Toh Phasee merely entertaining and it stops well short of being special, which is frustrating for film lovers like me. But balancing some of this out is the Parineeti Chopra factor.

Shaadi as a backdrop is a done to death plot device but Hasee Toh Phasee resists using it in the conventional sense for manufactured flirtations. Instead it chooses to concentrate on overbearing relatives and domestic troubles like water shortage/insufficient toilets in a house crammed with guests.

Hasee Toh Phasee makes two things clear: firstly, that Parineeti Chopra is the most talented actress to enter Bollywood in several years; and that Siddharth Malhotra is not only ridiculously handsome but also a promising actor.

Unfortunately, not much else is made clear in Hasee Toh Phasee. The plot is muddled, character motivations make no sense, and there's a lot confusion about who is who in the first half of the film. The pacing is terrible, and considerably worsened by songs that stick out like a sore (and unwelcome) thumb because their mood is so completely off from the rest of the film.

Hasee Toh Phasee is by far one of the most under appreciated movies we've seen till date. The light hearted movie which starred Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra was a fresh breeze in its time.
