Project Description: This project explores social media's impact on myself and society. I am able to do this by reviewing social media statistics and taking a quiz to determine my reliance to social media.
According to the results of the quiz, I am fairly reliant on social media. I knew my social media habits were not extremely bad, but the results of this quiz are making me reconsider exactly how much time I spend scrolling. I check social media most mornings when I wake up, and I spend periods of time simply scrolling when I could be productive doing something else. Based on my results, I will be cutting down my social media usage.
According to Pew Research, "Seven in ten Facebook users say they use the site daily, including 49% who say they use the site several times a day" (Auxier & Anderson, 2021). With almost 50% of users using the site multiple times per day, there is an obvious problem with user reliance on social media apps like Facebook. I chose to include this statistic to display how dependent social media users are on certain platforms. Although I am not a Facebook user, this statistic relates to me because I check Tik Tok multiple times per day and I myself have a problem with managing time on a social media platform.
I believe that social media has positive and negative impacts on society. Positively, social media unites groups of people who would have otherwise not met based off of common interests, etc. This has promoted activism in different communities and social change has been made possible because of social media platforms. There is also a downside to this. Since social media can unite people with good intentions, it can do the same for people with bad intentions and can create a space of unity for considerably "evil" people. Also, social media has become "addicting" with many users becoming glued to their screens rather than being productive.
Lessons Learned: After completing this project, I was able to learn how dependent I was on social media. Now being aware of this, I can make changes to my social media habits. I have also learned how dependent society is on social media through reading through Pew Research statistics on the subject.
