This portfolio was created by Amanda Cantillon and demonstrates my writing experiences in Com 101. The papers I wrote reflect a variety of writing styles and formats. The topics intertwined to reflect how one writer can experience the world around us differently then another writer. The assignments focused on creative analysis, social act connecting a conversation to the reader, the essence of compelling a discussion blending both narrative and exposition styles in writing in a creative manner and focusing on ideology. The style of writings forced the writer to learn how to take different aspects of writing styles and combine them into a paper. All the papers made the writer think out of their comfort zone and push them to incorporate different formats about their own ideas, beliefs and values.
All the writing assignments incorporated using different aspects of media. The writings mixed a variety of media styles - visual, sense of hearing and verbal styles to relate on a personal level to the reader. One writing assignment focused on combining photos and social media. The assignment used photos as a form of expressions and interpretations of an artist’s reality. Another assignment focused on blending narrative and exposition styles of writing by examining a writer’s daily routine and exploring the connection between what we see and fail to see. Being able to write using different styles and formats allow a writer to think deeper into the true meaning of surroundings, their life connection with the outside world and examine how they see themselves and how others will see them. The assignments allow a writer to learn the difference between an essay and a story. Lastly, the course has given me the opportunity to expand my writing capabilities and learn that combing styles or formats changes the entire paper for the reader.
In conclusion, the course provided me with the opportunity to explore multiple features of writing. Our very first writing assignment was to write a piece that was personal. The piece needed to incorporate a trait that others good not possible know by just looking at us. This specific paper focused on the feature of individualism. Individualism is a social outlook that emphasized on a person's moral worth. For me I wrote on my struggles of anxiety and how the condition has affected my life. Furthermore, another feature I have grasped was writing in a different point of view.. The assignment tackled a narrative and short story focusing on hatred in society. The writing demonstrated the feature on how an individual could be so consumed with hate and then eventually realize that the hate they thought was doing something well for society is damaging and how to eliminate the hate. Being able to examine the features of change and how change is possible will guide me to forgive individuals from past mistakes. Lastly the other feature I learned was information. This feature was completed by constructing a video with a powerful meaning. My group decided to create a video on bullying and to inform viewers how their actions impact others. This class has taught me many features that I will continue to use as I continue my college education.
