PSA- Stop Littering!
Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance; Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Reflection:
I created a sign to be displayed around my school and local community to encourage environmental awareness. Littering is a huge issue that impacts our environment in many negative ways; people, animals, and natural ecosystems get hurt or sick because of carelessness. Without proper waste disposal, Earth is truly at great risk. I created this poster for my school with the intention of inspiring young people to do something about a problem that affects all of us. We can make an impact by doing even the smallest, unimposing thing like throwing away our trash. If we choose not to make ourselves part of the problem, we become part of the solution.

Learning Outcomes:
Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth; Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process; Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.
Reflection:
As the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to go into lockdown, I decided to learn how to cook. I used to strongly dislike cooking because of how lengthy the processes were to make even the simplest of foods. However, cooking by myself taught me patience, and over time, I improved a lot of my cooking techniques. I learned how to recognize distinct flavor profiles, and I learned how to cook with a wide array of ingredients or even a small batch of ingredients. In the end, all of my foods tasted GREAT because I took the time and prepared it with love (it's a real thing!). I love cooking now, and I make dinner for my family at least once a week. Below are pictures of some of the dishes I have made during the last few months.

My classmates and I (very top right box) holding up Thank You signs to our IB Theory of Knowledge teacher, Mr. Woods. Many of our other teachers who we expressed our genuine gratitude for were moved to tears. We love our teachers so much!!
Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience; Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Reflection:
At the end of our Semester 1 finals of our senior year, I came across a video on social media of a Zoom class surprising and thanking their teacher by holding up "Thank You" signs to the camera. I loved the idea, introduced it to my IB DP classmates, and collaborated with them to come up with a similar plan. Our IB DP teachers have been so caring and understanding to us especially during this uncertain time of COVID-19, so my classmates and I decided to thank every single one of our wonderful teachers for devoting their time and resources to us during online school. It took a few days and a lot of communication to plan, but in the end, it was such a great experience. We started class with all our cameras off, I led the conversation by telling the teacher we had something to tell them, and then we all turned on our cameras at once and showed them how thankful we are for them. It was amazing, and I look forward to doing it again at the end of this semester.

Advanced Piano!
Learning Outcomes:
Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth; Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process; Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.
Reflection:
I have been playing piano since I was 5 years old (I am 17 now). I take lessons once a week, and I play a hard piano piece from memory at piano recitals twice a year. I started out learning a new song every week, and now the songs I play are very difficult and can even take up to a few months to learn. Learning how to play the piano is time consuming, attention demanding, and very tedious; you absolutely cannot get better at it without practice. Piano truly taught me how hard work pays off. It used to be a chore for me to come home to and practice every single day, but now I genuinely love playing it as much as I can. I've composed my own arrangements of songs, performed with my brother at multiple shows, and played with musicians at the youth and adult level. The most important bit I've learned from my years of playing piano was a piece of advice from my piano teacher: "If you mess up, it's okay! just keep playing." This translates to my everyday life too- it's totally fine to make mistakes- just keep going, you will be okay :)
My mom and dad standing by the picture board. My brother and I decided to bake 20 cupcakes and arrange them in the number 20 (in honor of their 20th anniversary), and the bouquet next to the cupcakes is the same bouquet my mom held at their wedding! (my dad saved it all of these years for her)

Reflection:
My parents had their 20th wedding anniversary on December 29, 2020, and to mark the occasion, I decided to make them a cute picture board decorated with greeting cards given to them by friends and family at their wedding along with their wedding pictures. I pieced them together in an overlapping but organized fashion on a poster board, and it was the cutest gift ever! This was definitely a challenge for me, as I really wouldn't call myself an artistic person by any means, but this poster definitely showcased a different side of my creativity that I have never seen before!

Reflection:
After the stress of junior year, I decided to relax in the summer by painting a picture. I did not consider myself to be good at any drawing or painting, but I persevered and took 3 weeks to draw the outline and paint the inside of it with various colors. This picture specifically required a lot of detail in the drawing, painting, and outlining steps of its creation. I learned how to take mistakes lightly and make the best of my abilities in this situation, and in the end, I could say it turned out pretty well!

Singing!
Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience; Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Reflection:
I sang my very first solo in front of 200+ people at the age of 5. Singing is an activity of mine that I have always enjoyed, and the opportunities I have been given over the years due to my skill and talent have been amazing. It has taken many years and many performances for me to master the voice technique of vibrato when I sing. Learning vibrato challenged me to take a risk and try something new, and because I took that risk, I can now do it easily on command.
A zucchini grown in our backyard garden, placed next to my forearm for size reference. The zoodles (zucchini noodles) we made with it afterwards were awesome too :)
Gardening!
Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience; Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Reflection:
Contrast to my strong dislike of gardening, my parents have great green thumbs. Every spring, they plant many different varieties of fruits and vegetables, and every fall, we have a plentiful harvest of organic foods. This year, due to COVID-19, I decided to take up the responsibility of taking care of the plants until fall. It was hard at first understanding the details of too much water/food and proper weather protection, but I quickly adjusted and our fruits and vegetables ended up amazing!
Reflection:
I have been a part of Model United Nations since my freshman year of high school. I love working with new people to solve issues of global importance such as world hunger, climate change, nuclear warfare, and so much more. I find it very difficult to speak up in huge meetings like these because I am afraid of embarrassing myself if I am proven wrong. Thankfully, the whole point of Model United Nations is to improve public speaking skills (along with many others), and this last year, I finally found my voice. I spoke confidently and passionately about my team's efforts to create a treaty regarding xenophobia and racism, and represented my country to the best of my abilities. In the end, I was rewarded for my efforts with an Outstanding Representation Award by the Monterey County Lyceum.
These pictures are from the Model United Nations Conference hosted live via Zoom in November 2020 that I attended from my home.
