Keynotes

Louise Addison

This keynote will look at the whakatauki ‘Waiho i te toipoto, kau i te toiroa’ via the stories that we can tell, uncover and share using mathematics and statistics.

In particular, I will focus on ideas for teaching the new numeracy and literacy standards and connecting them to meaningful mathematical and statistical contexts.

Louise Addison is the Principal of Edgewater College and former Mathematics and E-learning Advisor at Team Solutions as well as a Maths and Stats teacher at a range of schools in Auckland, London and Numazu (Japan).

She is still passionate about effective and engaging mathematics and statistics teaching and learning how we as leaders can best support that in our schools.

Clusters: 10am - 10:30am

Using our clusters to connect and share

In this session we will gather in our local cluster groups to reconnect.

For today please join the cluster region for where your school is located.

For those outside Auckland please gather in Room 4

For more information contact admin@aucklandmaths.org.nz  with the word "cluster inquiry" in the subject line

Room 1:   South Auckland and Counties Manukau

Room 2:  East Auckland Schools

Room 3:  Central Auckland

Room 4:  Orewa, North Shore and those outside Auckland

Room 5:   West Auckland

Workshop 1: 11am - 12:15pm

1A Level 1 Mathematics pilot: Two perspectives

Irene Bennet and Tania Killip

Botany Downs Secondary College and Hobsonville Point Secondary School

Irene Bennet will discuss her experiences of participating in the full level 1 mathematics pilot in 2023.  She will share what they learned and changes they made as well as results of the pilot.

Tanya will look at her experiences from participating in the integrated pilot of level 1 standards last year.  This involved integrating mathematics learning with learning in other curriculum areas and, to a lesser extent, with other level 1 pilot standards.  She will share examples of learning towards the two internal standards being integrated with PE and science.

1B Mentoring beginner teachers

Lucy Edmonds

Green Bay High School

Beginning teachers can come from a variety of sources: fresh new graduates, second career teachers as well as teachers newly arrived from overseas. They all require a range of support and systems to help them assimilate in the department. This workshop will offer practical tips and help for HODs to navigate the different support needed, unpack the requirements from the Teaching Council and how to preserve your sanity in the process.

1C Supporting anxious and low performing students in Year 9

Margi Leech

Maths Associates

This workshop will equip you to understand the reasons for maths anxiety and how to support low-performing learners in a fast track model in readiness for the standards.

1D Mis and Dis Information

Dr Pip Arnold and Dr Jennifer Glenn

Karekare Education and Simply Lit

Exploring misinformation and disinformation in statistics and english, an integrated unit of work for year 9 & 10 students.

1E Using Oracy to Elevate Mathematical Learning

Alana Madgwick

Educatalysts

In this interactive workshop you will learn practical strategies that support learners to engage in mathematical talk that elevates their learning and  builds connectedness and a sense of belonging in your classroom.

Workshop 2: 12:20pm - 1:35pm

2A Numeracy and the CAA

Sonia Carnie

Taradale High School

This workshop is designed to empower teachers with practical strategies and tools to integrate numeracy into their teaching and the wider curriculum.

Taradale High School is working on supporting students through
a) professional development for teachers to explore how numeracy skills can be reinforced
b) cross-curricular integration of numeracy skills in subjects beyond Mathematics
c) dedicated Numeracy support providing targeted intervention for students requiring additional support, through course design and with a whole-school approach.

We will share our progress, insights, experiences and resources.

2B Leading others through change

Susan Jackson

Diocesan School for Girls

New to middle management? This presentation is about sharing thoughts and ideas about being a HOD-Mathematics, particularly with the expectation of leading change. Susan will share thoughts and ideas about how you manage change while managing your teacher’s well-being, with time at the end to provide a space to connect, share and ask questions.

2C Creating department-wide classroom management strategies for student engagement

Malcolm Barr

St. John's College, Hamilton

Almost all barriers to learning can be broken down into two large groups:
1. Lack of engagement
2. Lack of understanding.

In this workshop you will look at lack of engagement and what Malcolm has done to create consistent department wide classroom management strategies for better student attention, listening and engagement.

The strategies are straightforward to implement and are easily observed by HODs doing classroom walkthroughs. The strategies do not involve any games or group work, they are designed to work in your existing lessons.

Malcolm will take you through what has and hasn't worked in my implementation and what he would do differently if he started the process from scratch again.

2D Exploring Challenges in Junior Mathematics

Sunny Dama & Robyn Goodare

Waiuku College

This workshop aims to address the diverse challenges encountered with the varying abilities of students within junior mathematics in New Zealand high schools. We will investigate the complexities of preparing students for the numeracy co-requisite amidst the evolving educational landscape.
The session will provide insights into the strategies we are considering at Waiuku College, alongside fostering an interactive discussion to share and learn from the collective experiences of the participants in the workshop. The goal is to brainstorm ideas that people can take away and try in their schools.

2E Sources of Variation

Zac Rutledge

Te Kura o Te Aho Pounamu

Explaining and managing sources of variation are critical in achieving the Statistical Investigations standard but the current definitions are perhaps not as helpful as they need to be.  In the workshop, you will delve into the nzmaths definitions and then look towards a deeper framework to support student thinking and responses when explaining and managing sources of variation in order to answer the question ""Can I even manage real variation?" You will discuss how to encourage pedagogically sound responses while still meeting the requirements of the standard.  Finally you will explore the resources on Census at School that will help prompt good discussion and deeper thinking when considering how sources of variation were managed in the data collection process for the census.

Final Keynote:  2:15pm - 3pm

In 2023 Pip was contracted to develop a mathematics investigation cycle for the New Zealand Curriculum. Working with Vince Wright and an advisory group they created the MPTC cycle for mathematics investigations.

In this afternoon keynote Pip will share a bit about the process of developing the MPTC cycle and give you time to use it.

Pip has been involved in mathematics and statistics education for over 35 years. She has been a head of department, secondary mathematics facilitator and worked with primary mathematics and statistics teachers.

Currently Pip supports mathematics and statistics teachers from year 1-13 through PLD, curriculum and resource development and sharing her interest in statistics education and cross-curricular learning. She often describes herself as a statistics educator who also masquerades as a mathematics educator.

Closing address and spot prizes. 3-3:15pm
