Personal Leadership Philosophy
My time within the UCF LEAD Scholars Academy has provided me with leadership expertise and experience that is applicable to a multitude of situations. As a LEAD Scholar, not only was I able to learn about different styles and theories of leadership, but I was also able to define my leadership philosophy in ways that align with my personal values. This philosophy is expressed within the Personal Leadership Philosophy linked to the left.
Leadership Experience
Serving on LSAC during the Spring 2021 semester allowed me to apply the concepts learned throughout my first year as a LEAD Scholar towards my first collegiate leadership experience. As an LSAC member, I served as a class representative between my LDR 2002 classmates and the LEAD Scholars Academy in order to promote student engagement while we were learning remotely due to COVID-19.
I was able to expand upon my leadership role on LSAC when I served as a LEAD Peer Mentor during the Fall 2021 semester. Not only did I have the opportunity to help teach course content within the LDR 2001 (Foundations of Leadership) course, but I was also able to mentor 18 first-year students as they made the daunting transition from high school to college.
As a member of SHAC, I aim to serve as a liaison between UCF Student Health Services (SHS) and the university's student body. In doing so, I help ensure that the services provided by SHS align with what students need in order to take charge of their health in ways that are meaningful to them. Serving on the Global Health subcommittee within SHAC has provided me with a chance to target UCF's multicultural and international student populations to ensure that SHS delivers quality care with cultural sensitivity.
Community Service
I have been volunteering at Second Harvest since my middle school years and have been able to play a small role in closing the food insecurity gap throughout Central Florida. During my time at Second Harvest, I have helped organize donated food items for distribution to those who need it most throughout the community. I have also assisted in the assembling of meals to be delivered as well. I believe that no one should ever have to go to bed hungry, and I am honored to be able to be a part of Second Harvest’s solution for this prevalent problem in our society.
Grace Medical Home is a medical clinic that works to serve Orange County's underserved. Through serving in Grace's Patient Registration department, I assist in the creation and updating of patient records within the clinic's electronic medical record. I also print and prepare patient registration forms prior to any registration appointments, ensuring that those who wish to become patients at Grace can do so with ease. Similar to the motives behind my volunteerism at Second Harvest, I believe that no one should be denied access to medical care for any reason. I am grateful to be able to volunteer at Grace Medical Home to not only improve the lives of the clinic's current patient population, but to also learn about and help eradicate the health disparities that impact the patients of tomorrow.
UCF RSO (Registered Student Organization) Involvement
UCF Pre-Med American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is a pre-health student organization that serves as a ‘one stop shop’ for all things pre-medical related. Unlike other pre-health organizations on campus, UCF Pre-Med AMSA is affiliated with AMSA National, the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training within the United States. From hosting biweekly general body meetings and frequent professional development activities relating to the medical school application process, Pre-Med AMSA strives to provide the resources needed for aspiring physicians to pursue their dream career in medicine.
UCF Neuroscience Alliance is a student organization with a mission of promoting awareness of and research conducted within the field of neuroscience. The organization seeks to inform its members about potential careers within neuroscience and the ways in which we can go about making those careers a reality after our time at UCF. Being involved in Neuroscience Alliance alongside Pre-Med AMSA has provided me with the opportunity to learn more about my dream career of becoming a pediatric neurologist and how my current academic and professional experiences relate to this career goal overall.
When one creates a vision board, they typically include images that relate to what they want their future to embody. When I created my leadership vision board as a component of the LDR 3950 (LEAD Capstone) course within the Academy, I chose to focus on how my past experiences will influence my leadership in the future. More about these experiences can be found in my Leadership Vision Board paper linked below the board.
