The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Characteristics and Causes - All children are diverse, including students who are gifted and talented. Gifted and talented students will not exhibit all characteristics all of the time. Gifted and talented children exhibit different characteristics and these characteristics can emerge at different times as the child develops cognitively, socio-emotionally, and physically. This paper explains the characteristics and causes that gifted children will exhibit. My strengths in this area is I had the opportunity to evaluate and explore this topic as it applies to secondary mathematics. I will accomplish teaching diverse children through identification of gifted and talented individuals. Identifying these students will allow me to challenge them to reach their full potential.
Strategies, Accommodations and Modifications - Strategies, accommodations, and modifications for gifted students are rarely examined worldwide. However, strategies that gifted students prefer are the most beneficial to understanding how to educate them more efficiently. This can be done through the various strategies that challenge the individual student. Differentiated instruction is essential to reaching all students, but differentiation for diverse students is most important. As a future teacher providing proper education for gifted students needs to be enacted to allow these students to succeed to their full potential, no matter the background.
Gifted and Talented Powerpoint - My approach on this topic was looking at students who are gifted and talented in the normal education classroom. That means these students may have even not been identified as gifted or talented. Gifted students must rely on a persistent parent, a responsive teacher, or an innovative school administrator to ensure that they are adequately challenged in the classroom. All children are unique, but children who are gifted and talented exhibit characteristics that can be built and constructed. This powerpoint encompasses both characteristics and causes, as well as, strategies, accommodations and modifications. Overall, giftedness is not a gift, but quality that is fostered by the individual and the people around them.
