General information:
Universities in the Netherlands are very much focused on starting off with a large amount of students in each course, however, over the course of the first year classes are cut down in student numbers. The atmosphere in the uni is therefore very much result oriented, especially in the first year. The culture of the dutch universities is very inclusive and lectures tend to look for contact with their students. Nonetheless, in the larger universities classes tend to be rather big (600 students), which limits the amount of personal contact professors can have with their students.
On the other hand, the student life thrives with a lot of social events and extra-curriculars. Cities such as Eindhoven, Tilburg and Grönignen are very popular and well known as student cities, which are very densely populated with international students. Students have to recognize that professors and teaching assistants may seem outgoing and companionable during social events however once it is time to work, the atmosphere is rather demanding and serious.
