Fictional characters in fictional worlds provide an opportunity for story-tellers to 'paint pictures' of the diverse world they wish to live in. Alternate Unrealities is an exhibition wherein printed posters transform into animated alternate versions using a web-based phone AR app. Viewers can point their smartphone at a QR code that launches the app and plays the animation without any need for downloading.
Most of our graduating seniors have been a part of the project, which includes 5 large posters (24” x 43” each). Each poster contains an advertisement of a well known pop-culture production including Scooby-Doo, Peanuts, PowerPuff Girls, Wonder Woman, and Disney Princess. Each poster animates on the viewers cell phone screen, where the diversity issue is explained and an alternative design is offered, all in an entertaining and approachable manner.
The diversity issues addressed in the animations include: cultural appropriation, harmful gender and body image representation, lack of disability inclusion, as well as ethnic and racial bias.
A video has been produced that captures the process and student voices as well as demonstrates how the app works. This video could also be part of the exhibition and it can be seen on Youtube: https://youtu.be/6sQ8UhfWZj4
All of the AR posters will be captioned and still accessible if there are sound issues, such as a noisy room or low volume. The video could be set up to work with headphones or one of the directional speakers the gallery owns.
We would be happy to give a demonstration of the project and discuss exhibition strategies. Contact Bill Fischer (fischerb@feris.edu)
