Burn's Bulletin

Shelly Burns, Education & Disabilities Manager

We will be meeting to look at the School Readiness Goals for the upcoming school year. If anyone is interested in being a part of this committee let me know.

The school readiness goals are the child's ability to demonstrate the foundational knowledge, skills, and behaviors in key areas or Domains of Learning that prepare him/her for curriculum based on the kindergarten standards. ... The Domains of Learning are Language & Literacy. Mathematics. Physical Well-being & Motor Development. Below are the school readiness goals for the 2023-2024 school year.

1.  The children will develop language and literacy skills to become lifelong readers and writers.

2.  The children will regulate their emotions to establish and sustain positive relationships and to participate in social situations appropriately.

3.  The children will use math and science skills daily to count, compare, relate, identify patterns, gather and organize information, and problem solve.

4.  The children will demonstrate focused attention, persistence, and engagement with lessons, activities, and materials.

5.  The children will demonstrate large and small muscle control for the purpose of accomplishing everyday tasks such as walking, balancing, eating, writing, and taking care of themselves.

6.  The children will explore their own cultural identity and their peers’ cultural identity becoming respectful, considerate, and understanding of differences.

I would also like to give everyone a friendly reminder that the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC) website is an excellent resource for teachers and staff working with a child with a suspected or defined disability. Choose the Topic tab at the top of the website and scroll to Children with Disabilities. There you will find titles such as, Coordinated Approaches to Serving Children with Disabilities where you can learn how coordinated approaches help children with disabilities participate in Head Start and Early Head Start programs. You can also access ideas to provide Highly Individualized Teaching and Learning where you can learn how to enrich activities for children with specific learning needs.

Requests for an evaluation by the local education agencies to determine if a child is eligible for special education services continue. Please know the process is lengthy, but that we are working very hard to get the children the services and supports they deserve. If you have a child for whom you are making adaptations, and you would like any specialized tools for the child’s use, please let me or your Education Supervisor know what is needed.
