Obituary for Sarah Louise (Smith) Presgraves

Mrs. Sarah Louise Smith Presgraves, age 96, of Newton, died Thursday evening, April 21, 2011 in Dothan.

Funeral services will be graveside on Monday, April 25, 2011, at 4:00 P. M. (EST) in St. Helena Episcopal Church Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina with Reverend Andrew Pearson officiating. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

Mrs. Presgraves was born August 4, 1914 in New York, New York, and was raised in Bridgeport, CT. She was the daughter of the late Albert Carrington Smith and Agnes Louise Plant Smith. She worked with Columbia Recording, Chance-Vaught Aircraft Company, and was Chief of Reservations Agent for Eastern Airlines, Washington, DC. Mrs. Presgraves was a member of the St. Helena's Episcopal Church where she volunteered many years, where she and her husband made an historical survey and directory of the old Church Cemetery and published a book titled "Old Churchyard and Cemetery of St. Helena's Episcopal Church". She was a former Secretary of the Beaufort County Historical Society. In 1998 she moved to Alabama to reside with family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, LTC James Cawood Presgraves in 2002.

Surviving are her three sons, Albert M. Presgraves of Portland, ME, Andrew C. Presgraves of Leesburg, VA, Donald C. Presgraves of Newton, AL; one step-daughter, Carol Ann Presgraves Alexander of Greensboro, NC; one step-son, Stephen James Presgraves of Fenwick Is, DE.
