How might we assess “Habits of Success” in ways that help students grow and develop, rather than reducing these habits to checklists?
Summit Public Schools developed a research-based framework for assessing their Habits of Success, which include social emotional learning, academic mindsets, learning strategies, and self-directed learning. The assessment strategies include teacher- and student- surveys, reflective conversations with mentors, and analysis of data on how students interact with resources on the platform. Summit uses the data from these assessments primarily for program-level decision-making. One of the questions Summit has been asking is how can Habits of Success assessments be most impactful at the individual student level - including the question of how to signal the importance of the Habits without attaching stakes to them. Summit is now piloting the Summit Diploma, a student portfolio defense that incorporates Habits of Success and engages each student’s “personal advisory board” as the audience for the defense.
