Through its “College, Career, and Community Writers Program,” the National Writing Project (NWP) partners with schools and districts to help teachers and students read critically, explore multiple points of view, and make evidence-based arguments on important issues. Formative assessment is an integral element of this process. The National Writing Project has developed a version of its Using Sources Tool that helps students self assess how they are using evidence to support claims in their writing. The NWP team has found that self-assessment and formative feedback are powerful elements of a learning culture in which students view writing as a social process that helps them refine and communicate their ideas.
