Virginian Students Achieve Success at FPS Internationals
Nine members of team Alpha STEM recently represented Virginia at the Future Problem Solving International Conference (FPSIC), which was held at University of Massachusetts Amherst from June 7th to 11th, 2023. Members of team Alpha STEM included four-time international qualifiers and up-and-coming newcomers to the international stage.
Future Problem Solving (FPS) Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) is a multidisciplinary competition that tasks individuals or teams to develop a research-backed solution on a futuristic STEM topic within a two hour time limit. Problems like digital reality, a robotic workforce, and throw away society are examples of research topics covered in the competition. This year’s international topic was currency. The 2022–2023 season marks the 49th year of the FPS program. 44 regional affiliates were present at FPSIC, representing eight different countries.
Previously, 13 students from Alpha STEM qualified for the state level competition, but only nine advanced to the International Conference, representing three divisions of GIPS. Lillian Duan, Lulu Huang, Amber Li, and Claire Zhang placed 2nd in the middle division internationally this year. The team has qualified for internationals annually since their first year of competition, and this marks their fourth consecutive year of participation in the FPS program. Junior Team members Cindy Cai, Lucia Huang, Bryan Tan, and Anthony Yu, advanced to finals for the presentation of their Action Plan. The team placed 16th internationally with only one year of prior FPS experience. Senior Team individual Jenny Wang represented Virginia in the MAGIC division.
