Image tends to be how people easily recognise you especially in an online setting. Personally I don't think they need to be anything complicated hence the simple design including my name and work colours - Blue (Me), Green (Tech/Management), Purple (Facilitation).
LinkTree is a very straight forward and easy way to put everything you do into a simple pop-up of links.
Mine simply contains my Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages along with having a link to my portfolio (and contact page).
The site also gives you a personalized link and QR Code to help promote yourself and make it easier for people to access your content.
Although there isn't many posts on the account what has been posted has proven useful in growing my presence. Even though it isn't major growth some of the contacts I have made may be able to come in handy in the future - some of these contacts include west end performers and directors.
The account is used to promote the work I doing and showcase what has been worked on. For example the season shows, and a smaller community festival I helped out at as part of the Royal Exchange.
I am a lot less active with posting on facebook but I keep up to date with the groups I am in. These groups include stage management resources, theatre work (UK), freelance groups, and some that sell equipment.
Most of these I am in to try catch some tips and see what works available around the country (even if I cant take on the job). Personal favourite is the Stage Management resources one and some really good tips and tricks get posted from time to time, and everyone is really useful when it comes to asking advice.
Im also not very active on LinkedIn however still find it important to have my account there incase that is the easiest form of contact someone may have with me.
LinkedIn was also made for networking within a professional environment
It can also come in handy when wanting to keep track of what certain theatres / companies are working on or needing.
The Home Page and About Me sections are kept simplistic and straight to the point showcasing some quick key points about me and my work. Pages such as the Gallery and my CV make for a quick and simple insight to what work I have done. My Shows and Project sections are lengthy with specific details into processes and decisions throughout.
For clarification: This is my work portfolio, but I have also kept all college work attached.
Most of my networking so far has been done through my connections with The Royal Exchange as an ambassador. Get-togethers held with the other ambassadors have helped me gain contact with a few directors, performers, and playwrights. I have gained contacts for people who work closely within HOME and Aviva Studios (Factory International) both who have offered me to contact them if I'm ever looking for work. and a local playwright (Joshua Val Martin) who premiered one of his shows at the Festival I helped host back in 2023.
Through college and my own journeys I've gained quite a few contacts within the industry and have been offered work by them on occasion. Recently I have worked with a high school doing the lighting for their pantomime (please see Snow White) and now have a deal with them for future shows/technician work they may need. I also have the connection with an independent theatre in Ramsbottom (Theatre Royal) that I made when working at the MET last year.
I have made connections with numerous schools and youth groups across Manchester. Some of these connections include my Highschool through my alumni status and The Royal Exchange Young Company.
Although I already have good networking with this theatre I wouldn't mind connecting with more of their actual in-house technicians and production team.
I think it would be smart to try working with these theatres soon as they are based closer to where I will be continuing my education and would allow me to continue building contacts in the theatre industry alongside my degree.
Hope Mill is known for being very accommodating towards new technicians and can be great for getting more professional experience and contacts.
Depending where I am based in the future connections within any West End theatres would prove incredibly useful as it would mean I'm more likely to gain more work and would also just give me the contacts needed for if I ever need a role filling or need advice.
One of the main reasons I am going to this university is for the networking opportunities. Since I still don't know whether or not I would like to only do theatre this is my best option to also gain contacts with people in other sectors of the industry. Due to the campus location I am also likely to be able to make contact with large production companies such as Tait, 4Wall, and others.
Attending networking events such as Production Futures and Plaza is a great way of seeing the upcoming things within the industry along with meeting plenty of technicians.
Although not being as personal Facebook groups are great for communicating with other people within the same sector as you, or even other sectors within the industry. The groups are also rather well labelled and very versatile so if you're looking for work, advice, or equipment its easy to find it and connect with the people needed.
Local Schools that actively offer performing arts to their students would be an effective source to contact about my current Workshop Project.
Connecting with youth groups such as theatre young companies would also be a great way to connect and promote my work. (Some of this I have already started thanks to Assistant Facilitator applications being promoted)
Specific schools / groups would depend on where I am based at the time - for examples please see G18.
