What is Thy Kingdom Come?

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ.

Why is it important?

Thy Kingdom Come takes place in a world where the need for prayer has never been greater. We have an incredible opportunity to show the love and peace of Jesus Christ, not just in our own lives but in our communities, too.

Thy Kingdom Come focuses on both prayer and care: encouraging people to pray for others to come to know Jesus’ love in their own lives, and also to demonstrate that love in action.

Southwark's Mission Department has designed free resources to help us mark this event while observing Government guidelines on social distancing:

  • ‘Everyday Faith – Hidden Church’ reflections for the Nine Days based around the theme of the ‘Persecuted Church’. The Southwark Vision is to see “justice and peace built up, and violence challenged in our local and global community”. We have an opportunity during the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray for anyone who is persecuted for their faith and for those who cannot freely pray. The Apostle Paul wrote that when one part of the Body of Christ suffers, every part suffers with it, and if one part is honoured, every part rejoices (1 Corinthians 12:26). It is with this in mind that I commend “The Hidden Church”. The vision for this booklet of prayer has come from the Rev’d Sue Thomas and I am grateful for her prayerful concern for the persecuted church. I believe that this is a concern that all traditions in the Diocese of Southwark share. It is in this spirit that we offer this prayer resource and widen our horizons to pray “Thy Kingdom Come” with the persecuted church. Download in booklet format here and as single pages here

  • a prayer postcard with space to write the names of five people for whom you are praying and caring. Download the postcard here

  • a leaflet with ideas and inspiration for marking the event at home. Download the leaflet here

  • a specially adapted order of service for morning and evening prayer from Ascension to Pentecost. Download them in booklet format here and as single pages here
