YouTube Copyright

Why occasionally hymns may be muted in our YouTube services

We use recordings of hymns provided by the Church of England and marked by it as copyright free.

Copyright lasts for 70 years after the authors’ death and the hymns we choose are, we believe, copyright free.

However we are finding that, after we have uploaded videos, YouTube occasionally marks some hymn tunes as copyright. Someone is claiming copyright on hymn tunes which we believe are too old to be in copyright.

Unfortunately we cannot realistically contest this and so we are left with two alternatives:

  • Allow the copyright claimer to add adverts to our service to get income

  • Allow YouTube to mute the hymn

We choose to do the latter as there is usually no way easily to remove or replace the hymn and interrupting the service with adverts would be unacceptable.

We apologise for any inconvenience.
