Collaboration allows teachers to capture each other's fund of collective intelligence." --Mike Schmoker
Effective online educators acknowledge a continual need for learning and professional development in education. It helps us continually refine and polish our practices and it enhances quality teaching. Online education has been growing at an exponential rate and teachers need to be able to develop and deliver online education effectively. To do this, we need to consider all the many positive aspects of online learning and how we can present online education in a transformative way.
My @ONE courses provided me with excellent information that I should be thinking about as I refine my courses. The presenters provided a wealth of valuable resources and truly encouraged me to be thinking outside of the box. I now look at my courses through new lenses and challenge myself to construct, design, create, or improve something in my courses each semester. The possibilities are endless, and both my students and myself will benefit from on-going professional development.
I always understood that professional development was an important strategy to support student achievement. However, navigating the digital world can be complex. My passion for teaching has always pushed me to gain more knowledge and continually find ways to improve my skills and practices. As an instructor who teaches pre-service teachers, I have always looked for ways to refine my pedagogies to improve student learning outcomes. I continued my professional development through educating myself further through the high-quality @ONE courses.
On this fast-paced digital highway, we all know that education is a never-ending process. I believe that teaching is as much a learning experience for the educator as it is for the student. Professional Development occurs not only through conferences and workshops, but it truly occurs daily through all our interactions. Some of those take place in informal contexts such as discussions with other faculty, research, reading, and observations of other faculty's work. This ensures that, we, as educators, continue to grow, improve our skills, and become more proficient in our careers.
I have always been one to take courses to advance my knowledge and develop highly effective lessons. Being in the field of education has made me always want to be at the forefront of pedagogical practices and develop lessons that were engaging and student-centered. Having taken several @ONE courses has really helped me improve my courses overall. I was motivated each time I took a course to come back and take more to advance my learning. I have benefited greatly by having been part of the @ONE courses and am excited to have had the opportunity to work with such inspirational educators.
I realize more than ever that ongoing professional development is a central component to effective online teaching. Because technology is dynamic, connecting with students is even more critical to keep them engaged in our online courses. The more we as educators learn, the more our students learn. Since professional development is cyclical, as an effective educator, I want to expand my knowledge and skills to implement my best educational practices in my courses. To do this, I plan to explore and inquire about different types of technology and how it is used effectively online. I want to use technology that maximizes student engagement, motivation, and accelerates learning. I now know more than ever that technology has the power to transform teaching through this innovative model of online learning.
