Social and emotional learning and equity both address how to provide high-quality instruction for all students, regardless of background. -Robert Jagers
I have followed my passion for educational equity and culturally responsive teachings by reflecting this principle throughout my course. Below are some ways, I am continually trying to improve my professional practices.
Here are some of the ways I will make changes to my course to demonstrate educational equity.
...............................
My Welcome Module introduces my students to the course. I felt a "Welcome" module would provide the necessary resources and information to make them feel prepared for future modules. It provides a step-by-step way for my students' to be successful. In this module, I introduced myself and online learning. Taking an online course can be daunting and new for many students, and I want them to feel supported all the way though the course.
Another way that I support equity in my course is to make sure that everyone can afford the books and materials that they need. I have reached out to our Educational Partnerships on campus, financial aid, grants, and librarian, to make sure that all of my students are supported. The college library is a great resource, and I partner with them to sure that they have a copy of the book I use available in their reference section. This way I know each student has access to the materials they need, and it is another way I can support my students if they cannot afford their materials.
This Golden Circle activity really took a look at how I could inspire my students to focus on "why" they do what they do and not the "how" or the "what". As an educator, I want to make sure that I inspire and empower my student to do their best and build long-lasting relationships. Having my students critically think will challenge them to understand the material and be able to problem solve. I want my student's to be able to constuct ideas and make connections with my lessons. This will give them the reasoning power to infer, interpret, analzye and explain what they are learning.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. -Nelson Mandela
