This is a soft 3D self-representation. For this piece, I crocheted and stuffed a doll's body. The body proportions reflect my own, long legs and average torso. I embroidered face details, crocheted twenty-five hanks of hair, and straightened them to match my own. For the clothes, I sewed mini-Anya, a matching smock (in our favorite gingham) with front pockets and a back zipper. In her pocket she carries her own miniature paint brush. I chose to crochet the doll because it is analogous to the pointillism style of drawing that I frequently use. The two different media are similar because each stitch contributes to the whole project in the way dots are used in my drawings.

Plaster cast

This mask is made from a plaster cast of my face. The sun has always been my symbol in life. Growing up, our family friend, Tia Rosie, was a ceramicist, and her work always included imagery of suns, a symbol in Mexican culture for strength, power, and love-giving energy; all attributes with which I try to lead my life. Masks symbolize concealing one’s identity, but this mask amplifies the warm energy I like to portray.
