 This painting is the beginning of a series that challenges the idea that women's worth to society is determined by their beauty and natural things such as aging and skin conditions. This is a self-portrait oil painting. I painted myself at the height of my struggle with cystic acne, the ugliest I have ever felt. But that was a feeling, and it was created by the unattainable beauty standards of our society. I hope other humans will see this painting and realize that their skin is beautiful, even if it is filled with acne. Acne is a physical expression of becoming an adult and an indicator of the mental energy spent on something you care about. Why do caring and changing have to be classified as undesirable? This is the change I strive to advocate for, a change in how the world views natural parts of life.

 This is a surrealist self-portrait with colored pencils made to represent different aspects of my personality that can not help but spill out. It represents the ambiguity of the information we take in and subsequently regurgitate. The version of myself with an hourglass attached to my head represents my anxiety regarding time. The rainbow version of myself represents my hypochondria by referencing the classic children’s book “A Bad Day of Stripes.” The outline of the heads emanating from the mouth demonstrates the fluidity of a liquid and how it can be constrained along a surface. Interestingly, this piece can be mounted horizontally or vertically, although my intended orientation is as above. This piece was chosen for a town-wide student artwork show at my public library and was also displayed at Town Day, where kids were asked how many faces they saw.

 Yet another self-portrait (I seem to be the most cooperative subject I know). I usually do not work in this large of a format for stippling, but I decided to be ambitious for this work-in-progress. I portrayed myself in black and white and the animals in color to show the contrast between the seriousness of my mood and the playfulness of the stuffed animals.

This is an observational drawing of myself wearing a paper hat I made to represent the sun. This is a sister piece to my sun mask, Reina del sol.
